Charitable donati.,n recognized at Lions convention
A donation of $1,450 worth of merchandise
has been made by the District A-9 Lioness
Clubs to each of four Women's Crisis Cen-
tres located in Kincardine, Goderich,
Orangeville•and Owen Sound.
The donation was recognized at the 14th
Annual District A-9 Lions Convention, held
April 15, 16 and 17 at the Waterloo Inn. The
three day event was hosted by the Mount
Forest Lions Club.
Reports from various committees were
given, and awards were handed out. The
report from District President Judi Lacelle
about her special project for the year was on
the women's shelters. With the support of
the district Lioness clubs she was able to get
her project off the ground, and she got in
touch with many different companies. Some
were quite generous, and Jergens donated
80 dozen bars of soap, Goddy Hair Products
donated 52 dozen hair brushes, Noxema Ltd.
provided 48 dozen deodorant, and Zehrs
donated 20 dozen pens and a merchandise
voucher, as well as providing most of the
other company contacts. The result of the
canvass was $5,800 worth of merchandise.
CONVENTION ACTIVITIES
The )Lions convention started off. with a
pink flamingo challenge held at poelside at
+'the Waterloo Inn. Participants were given
points for every pink article they could fit on
themselves from pink toenails to hot pink
hair. Charity was also in the air, and $1 gave
participants a chance to flip chips into pink
flamingos or fish a pink balloon out of the
pool. All proceeds went to the Canadian Na-
tional Institute for the Blind.
On Saturday morning opening ceremonies
were held and speeches given. The Lions
and Lioness' then departed for separate
meetings for the afternoon and reports such
as the one by Mrs. Lacelle were given.
Everyone was together Saturday evening
for the Governor's Ball. The guest speaker
was Past International Director William
Biggs from Omaha Nebraska, and he gave a

The AALP seminar in Ottawa, March
23-25, addresed the theme "Government:
Impact and Influence". Local participants
included: PAT DOWN, RR 1, HENSALL,
BILL WALLACE, RR 4, SEAFORTH, AND
BRYAN VINCENT, SEAFORTH.
Members of the program met with senior
officials in several departments, including
James Hewitt, recently appointed chairman
of the Farm Credit Corporation and Michael
Gifford head of the Agricultural sector in
the Trade Negotiations Office. They discuss-
ed the impact that both financial and trade
policies will have on agriculture in Ontario.
Senator Norm Atkins recounted his ac-
tivities as one of the organizers behind the
Ontario "big blue machine", then told of his
current role in the Canadian senate. The
senate, according to Atkins, is essential in
our parliamentary system as the body of
"sober second thought".
On the final day the AALP groups met
with representatives of a similar group
from Pennsylvania, USA known as RULE
(Rural Leadership). Together they visited
US Ambassador Thomas Niles at the US
Embassy for discussions on free trade and
international politics.
