The Huron Expositor, 1988-02-03, Page 11Novice undefeated The Seaforth Novice hockey team won four straight hockey games to capture the 1988 North American Silver Stick Cham- pionship tournament, played in Michigan on the weekend. The Novice beat Behnont twice and Fraser, Michigan and Troy, Ohio each once to win the title. SEAFORTH 7 -TROY 0 Seaforth's Chris Marion started the pen- dulum swinging, when he scored the local team's first goal of the tournament, against Troy, Ohio. He was unassisted. e Less than one minute later Shaun Anstett, also unassisted, pocketed a goal, then seconds later pocketed another. Brent Hulley scored a third Seaforth goal with nine seconds remaining in the first period. In the second period the Seaforth team played a more defensive game. Anstett got in Silver Stick the only goal of the period to secure his hat trick. He was assisted by Brandon Nash. In the third period Mark Van Dooren scored off a beautiful pass from Pat Gridzak and Chris Marion scored his second goal of the game. The Player of the Game award went to Anstett. SEAFORTH 7-FRASER 0 The Seaforth Novice recorded another 7-0 score against Fraser, Michigan in the se- cond game of the tournament. As in the previous game Anstett delivered the first goal of the game. He was assisted by Jason Smith and Pat Coyne. The next goal came in the second period when Van Dooren finished off a perfect pass from Pat Gridzak. Chris Marion also scored in the second period after he stole the puck on a neat defensive play in his zone, and THOMPSON'S BONSPIEL Bill Harmer was one of the curlers left in. the final match of the day at the W.G. Thompson and Sons Limited Annual Bonspiel. The bonspiel is held for the company's customers every year, and everyone received a prize. Mr. Harmer's the winner. rink was startled the Fraser goaltender with a hand wrist shot to the corner. From that point on Seaforth was all over the Michigan boys. The local team scored four goals hi the third period, with the line of Anstett, Pat Coyne and Jason Smith com- bining to score two of those goals, within 23 seconds of each other - Ansett scored his se- cond goal with Coyne assisting and Smith beat the goaltender with held from Coyne and Anstett. The sixth goal was scored by Jered Munro on a shot from the point. The play was started, with a perfect pass from Pat Gridzak deep in the offensive zone. The final goal was scored by Marion, unassisted. SEAFORTH 5•BELMONT 3 The third win came a little harder for the Seaforth team as they struggled to a 5-3 win over Belmont. Turn to page 14A • Ringette squad has no losses The Seaforth Tweens Ringette Team played two out of town games this week to finish up their regular season with eight wins, two ties and no losses. Last Tuesday the Tweens played Forest and won by a score of 6-2. Scoring were: Tracy Fortune with three and Jodie Buell, Kim Rau and Jill Betties picking up one each. Getting an assist was Julie Carter. On Sunday in Goderich the Tweens were up against tougher competition. Seaforth was leading 4-3 until the 3:04 mark of the final period when Goderich scored to tie the game.. With 2:45 left in the game Seaforth couldn't • take advantage of Goderich's penalty, to move ahead and the final score ended 4-4. Scoring in this game were Tracy Fortune with three and Jodie Hugill with one. Get- ting assists were Cheryl Mcllwain and Kris Gemmell. Andrea Gingerich played well in net to keep us in the game. Deloyer 626. 237 - 535, and Jeff Bridge 209 - 498 were the leaders. The first place Cougars downed the Leopards •5-2 and 2915-2702 in pinfall. Richard Love with 229, 217 - 618; Cathy Broome 235 - 616; Don Nolan 231 - 616; and Pat Ryan 220 - 594 were high bowlers for the Cougars. Sandy Broadfoot 298 - 620 and Ken Moran 218 - 567 were best for the Leopards. The Tigers nipped the Panthers 5-2 and 2899 - 2877 in total pins in three very evenly played games. Pat Nolan 242, 211 - 651; George Love 218 - 607 and Carol Johnston 203 - 562 were high for the Tigers. Deb (bet you a quarter) Barry cornered the women's weekly high single with an im- pressive 248 and the women's weekly high triple with an awesome 634. Bantams beat London The Seaforth Bantams played an exhibi- tion game Saturday at the Gardens in Lon- don and came away with a 4-3 win. Scoring for Seaforth were Kevin McLi- wain with two goals and one assist, Ted Sills with one goal and one assist and Jason McNichol with one goal. Other assists went to Brad Schroeder, Paul. McElwain, Jeff Gemmell and Brent van den Akker. Jeff Weber and Jason Patterson were super in goal. The Seaforth Bantams are waiting for the outcome of the first round of playoffs bet- ween Mitchell and Clinton. The series is now tied at a game apiece. Sioux still' leading SENIORS BOWLING LEAGUE The Sioux under Captain Campbell Wey, continue to lead the Seniors Bowling League.
