FCC to survey farmers about farm finances
The Chairman of Farm Credit Corpora-
tion Canada, Jim Hewitt, has announced the
Corporation is conducting a national survey
of 8500 farmers to gather information on the
financial structure of Canadian farms.
The survey is being carried out in col-
laboratioi'-with Agriculture Canada,
Statistics Canada and several provincial
governments_
"The it ,lavation obtained from the
survey will be instrumental in the develop-
ment of agricultural policies across
Canada," explained Mr. Hewitt. "The Cor-
poration conducted similar surveys in 1981
and 1984, but current data as needed to give
us a clear picture of the financial strengths
and weaknesses of Canadian farms. As well,
the results will permit us to measure the
changes that have occurred in the structure
of Canadian farms since the beginning of
this decade."
The survey questions focus on the amount
of money borrowed last year, capital invest-
ment
nvestment during the same period, the size and
type td. operation, inventory, farm revenues
and expenses, and the financial structure off
the enterprise.
"I would like to emphasize that individual
responses to the questionnaire will remain
confidential. We are looking for information
on a statistically reliable sample of farmers
involved in certain kinds of production or
farming in the same region," said Mr.
Hewitt.
The results of the farm survey will be
published in the autumn off 1988.
