NEW BUILDING STARTED - The Expositor ran this picture on June 29, 1983, to show
both the work underway on the new house on the Carnochan lot, and the Carnochan
house which was then planned to be torn down.
• from Pagel
own the house for a great length of time, and
when they let it go it saw various owners and
some rough times.
Leo Medd obtained the house in 1978, and
in 1983 he set out to build another home on
the lot and tear down the Carnochan house.
At that time the house had been described as
`an older decayed house.' The changes
made a lot of neighbors unhappy, and they
disputed a proposal by Mr. Medd to
Seaforth's committee of adjustment that he
be granted a minor variance so he could
build the home to his specifications'. A hear-
ing at the Ontario Municipal Board follow-
ed. The result was that Mr. Medd did not
tear the house down, even though he had
already built the foundation and poured ce-
ment for the walls. -
David Cobb and his wife Loral bought the
building in September of 1983. They bad the
foundation in their backyard filled in and set
about restoring the home.
When they got the building it was in poor
condition, but they personally did most of
the painting and papering, had the floors
stripped and refininshed, and the holes in
the walls patched. The outside of the
building was painted and repaired, and once
again it is one of Seaforth's most handsome
and unique houses from a bygone age.

Another local band 'Stunned'
gets its start at the Queens e
The Queens Tavern has beertlkeeing its
share of local rock bands lately, as another
band from Seaforth played its first live per-
formance there last week.
"Stunned" is the second Seaforth band to
play the Queens in the month of December.
The band is made up of Al Chesney, Richard
Swirklis, John McLeod, and Jeff Ball.
These local musicians have been playing
in various bands with different people for
the past two years. Al and Richard have
been playing together for the past three
years, and for a while had a band with two
members of the group "Sceptre" whom the
Expositor featured in a story December 23,
1987. Now the two groups are in competition
against each other and there seems to be a
healthy rivalry brewing.
Stunned plays what they call party rock.
y borrow their tunes from performers
David Wilcox, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC,
and Kiss. Their music is heavier than some
of the more commercial bands like to play,.
but the crowd at the Queens on Wednesday
night showed some loud appreciation for
what they were hearing.
The band also has some originals that
they play. "Goin' to the bar," "Jammin in
Jamaica," and "O.D." were all produced by
the band, and from what they heard their
audience liked them as well as the songs
they play by other artists. '
b.l' it ` it ' members come from the
S' afo; are. A, ,mey, bass player and
ea) voce; *. I ' li' in Seaforth all 22
years of Itrib. . g`t interested in music
when Richard started teaching him how to
play guitar and bass three years ago. He
had a knack for music and pieced it up easi-
ly. After about a year of jam sessigns they
started their first band, and two yells and a
lot of band members later they are where
they are today. When he's not playing in the
band Al is working at Dashwood Industries.
Richard Swirklis, lead guitar, picked 'ftp
his fust guitar shortly after he moved to
Seaforth when he was only in Grade 6. He is
completely self taught, and has only ever
taken one lesson. He said he went in for a
one learning sessipn, and decided light
away it wasn't worth the money.
Richard says at first he learned guitar by
looking at pictures of rock stars and where
their fingers were on the strings. He would
just pick up his guitar, hold it hire the person
In the picture held his, then hit the strings
and see what it sounded like. In this way he
learned a lot of the major rock sounds. Ten
years after he picked up his fust guitar, at
the age of 22, Richard says he still isn't as
good as he would like to be, Richard is a full
time guitarist.
John McLeod got his first set of drums in a
card game two years ago. He put them to
use right away though, and did a lot of play-
ing before he joined Stunned. He was with
another and that played hotels in Clinton,
as well as a lot of parties and buck and does.
He is the first to admit that the band was
really bad, but says they had fun and people
pushed them into it and were really suppor-
tive.
About a year ago he split up with his old
band, which was right at the time Al and
Richard were breaking up with their old
partners, so the three got; together. They bl-
ed the same kind of music and they got
along well, and since they got together
things have been going their way. -
John is also 22, and he works for a contrac-
tor putting in telephone cables.
•
Jeff Ball plays rhythm guitar and is the
newest member of Stunned as he joined
about a month and a half ago. Aside from his
interests in music, Jeff puts in time at the
West End Garage in Clinton, and he is ap-
prenticing to be a mechanic. Jeff was in the
same band as John that played in Clinton.
He is the oldest member of the group at 25.
There are a lot of other, yle involved
with the band as well. `Rocket' Ron Davis is
the group's sound man and is going to he
handling their lights. Natalie Swirkliss and
Darlene Kramers help the band out with
things like fashion coordination, hair
design, and make-up.
The band wanted to make it clear that
"Stunner" is only a temporary name. They
got the.aame while John was talking to a bar
manager who asked what their name was.
They didn't have a name at the time, but
there was a lot of different names they had
been thinking about twirling around in
John's head. "Stunned" was the first thing
out of his mouth. The bar manager got such
a chuckle out of it that the name stuck and
they haven't bothered to get a new one yet.
For the first time the band played
something where they made some money
when they played three nights at the
Queens, They are hoping for some more
work and have applied to three other agen-
cies, one in London and one in Dorchester, to
get them booked at other bars.
On the music end, the bands goal is to get
a new set of tunes which would include the
best of the older songs they play now, a host
of contemporary popular songs, and their
own originals.
The band hopes they can live up to their
self appointed title: "the Huron suds band of
the eighties."
'STUNNED' played the Queens tavern in Seaforth recently. They are the second local
band to get the chance to show what they can do, and try to break into the bar circuit
full time. Corbett photo.
