Mrs. Audrey Ulch, North Bay, spent a few Guide going to Europe For the first time in Brussels Girl Guide history, a local girl will spend one month on an International Girl Gukle trip. Ruth Ann Watts, daughter of Max and Barb Watts of Brussels was chosen as one of 12 girl guides, who along with three leaders from Ontario will participate in the program. She will visit the Girl Guide Chalet in Switzerland, the Girl Guide Glove House in London, England and visit Germany. She will leave on July 5 and return on Aug. I. Chosen by the Girl Guide Association of Cana ia, Ruth Ann was the guide chosen from the Maple Way Area to represent her troupe. But before she was chosen, Ruth Ann had to pass several tests and fill in several applications forms to become eligible. The international trip will have 85 girls from six countries getting together. The girls will tour each country they visit including a tour of the palace and Westminster Abbey in England. In Germany, they will travel in vans to points of interest. But the big thing for the guides is their stay in the chalet in Switzerland. "It's a big thing and the area is well known for the hiking trails," says Ruth Ann. "We're going to hike the Alps and 1 will be camping and associating with other kids." While in England, Ruth Ann will be staying at the Scout Hpuse because the Olave House is full. She hopes to have a good time at the Scout House and admits she's looking forward to her stay there "because of the boys". SHORT SHOTS by Evelyn Kennedy A truly courageous person is not the reckless one who goes into danger without fear, It is the person who. filled with fear. does what has to be done in spite of it. ••••••• The Canadian Radio -television and Tele- communications Commission (CRTC) found the courage to deny Bell Canada permission to increase local telephone rates by six per cent and long distance rates by two per cent for homes and businesses. That's good news for those of us who much prefer talking, rather than writing to distant family mem- bers, friends and who enjoy chattering with local friends. The CRTC wasn't convinced that Bell needed the money now and told the company they could meet its target by reducing expenses. A Bell spokesman said the company was veru disappointed and the denial could mean longer service and installation delays and further reduction of the work force. Was that a veiled threat of defiance to the CRTC denial? H&N DAIRY SYSTEMS Lip. When the huge machines were breaking up the old paved surface,' reaching the main business section was an uncertain and roundabout undertaking. Even then, one needed sure and stable footsteps to negotiate through boulders and holes and keep sharp lookout for oncoming machines, Never before had the business area seemed so bare of shoppers. One never knew from day to day if they could safely drive the same route to reach their destination without encountering a working monster machine and a detour.
