New rules made for
on-farm feed mixing
litT R. L. ROTHMEL
Assoc. Ag. Rep.
Many farmers are calling regarding “new
rules for on-farm feed mixing". Farmers who
mixed concentrated drug products at levels of
10 kilograms or less per tonne (20 pounds or
less per ton) are now required to register as a
feed manufacturer with Ag. Canada's Feed
and Fertilizer Division. About SO different
drug products, mainly for therapeutic and
growth promotion pures.• now require
farmer registration. These "Feed Act"
amendments became law last July.
Some farmers who mix concentrate drug
products use weighing and mixing equip-
ment not accurate enough for very small
quantities to be added, according to A.
Canada. However, most mixing equipment is
accurate enough at mixing drug products at
10 Kg. per tonne or more.
Farmers can apply for feed manufacturer
registration by contacting the nearest feed
and fertilizer division office or writingin D.N.

label for hotnemadefeeds alignments
and their amounts as well as all drug'; and
feed additives used, will also be requested.
Official inspectors may make some visits to
some farms, but not all, according to Ag.
Canada.
Farmers who use concentrated drugs at
low levels without government registration
could be charged tinder Section 3 of the Feed
Act. Penalties inclucte.fines and possible jail
sentences.
