How to be a
winter driver
Caution is the best defense against winter
weather, the Ontario Safety League reminds
drivers.
It says too often motorists forget not only to
prepare their vehicles but also to prepare
mentally for the hazards brought on by snow.
sleet and ice.
Motorists should know winter driving
techniques. Learn how to brake your car on
slippery roads -and the right way to handle a
skid.
The Ontario Safety League recommends
that drivers use the squeeze braking method
to stop the car on slick or icy roads. Squeeze
the brake pedal down until you feel the brakes
are about to lock up: Ict off the brake. then
squeeze again. This will allow you to slow
down very quickly. but you will keep your
tires rolling and thereby traction. which is the
key to being able to steer.
Squeeze braking is not something a driver
can piaster instantly. The motorist should get
e feel for the brakes as soon as the car
rolling and before entering heavy traffic. Test
how slippery the road is by gently applying
your brakes and getting a feel for where your
car is going to lock up. It is a matter of
practice.
In a skid. steer in the direction you want the
front of the car to go. Get off the accelerator
and don't touch the brakes. Be prepared for a
second skid in the opposite direction. Once
you have the car back under control. use the
squeeze braking technique to reduce speed or
stop.
Remember. using your seatbelt will help
keep you behind the wheel In the es cat of a
skid and in a position of control

There is a considerable difference between
"indoor' and "outdoor" Christmas lights
The Ontario Safety League reminds people
that they are not interchangeable. For one
thing. outdoor lights are designed to
withstand extreme changes in weather and
temperature and they tend to gel hot. With
