Change and challenge
A 10 -week sign language course is being
held in Seaforth every week. Five adults are
learning to translate verbal speech into hand
motion so they can communicate with the
deaf.
MAY 23
A house owned by Gerry Heyink of Hensall
is being moved 40 miles to Blyth. The house
was purchased by Raymond and Wilma
.Rammeloo. The move took four days because
the house was 20 tons heavier than estimated
and because Hydro and CP rail crews were
not available for a weekend move.
Fire levelled a shed at the farm of Jack
Ryan of RR 1, Walton. Karl Boven, an
employee at the Ryan farm received burns to
' his hands.
A public meeting showed that Dublin area
people are not interested in French Immer-
sion. Only 15 people attended the meeting to
learn about French language available to
students.
Ten Egmondville,homeowners were told by
Tuckersmith council that they are financially
responsible for their own water.supply. The
homeowners are presently getting their
water from their own 'wells or buying it from
their neighbors. But water supply is becom-
ing a problem and some wells have dried up.
MAY 30
Faye Carnochan and Dave Murray were
chosen Queen and King of the Seaforth
District.High School spring formal. Both are
in grade 13.
Ken Campbell of RR 1, Dublin is planning
to sail the Atlantic Ocean again. He made his
first crossing in 1973 and will sail a 40 foot
sloop within the next week. He will make the
voyage with two fellow sailors.
Korea war veterans were honored by the
Seaforth Legion when a plaque was unveiled
at the cenotaph at Victoria Park. Of the 10
Korean veterans from Seaforth, Don Muir
was the only one to participate in the
ceremony.
A Ronald McDonald House is being built in
London, and Seaforth people are being asked
to help raise money for the project. The house
will be accommodation for families who have
children receiving treatment in London
hospitals.
JUNE 6
Bonnie Turner, 15, of RR 4, Seaforth has
earned national recognition from the Royal
Canadian Legion. She wrote an essay on
Remembrance Day last fall and it recently
won the national competition.
War veteran, George Case of Seaforth. will
celebrate the 40th anniversary of the
liberation of France and the D-day landing on
the beaches of Normandy. George and Jane
Case will be in France with thousands of
World War 11 veterans to mark the occasion.
A charge of murder against Clarence
Joseph Schnurr of Wingham in connection
with a death in Belgrave last fall has been
dismissed. Judge W.J. Cochrane ruled there
was not sufficient evidence to bring the case
to trial.
Students of St. Patrick 's school, Dublin and
St. Columban school, held their confirmation.
Auxiliary Bishop Marcel Gervais officiated.
JUNE 13
Three Huron County public schools under
review for the past five months will remain
open. The three schools which were reviewed
include J.A.D. McCurdy in Huron Park.
Hensall Public School and Vanastra Public
School.
Over 150 people attended the Seaforth
District High School Girls' Trumpet Band
reunion to reminisce and hear the present
band play. For the first reunion in 10 years.
over 400 invitations were sent out to band
members from 1968 to 1984.
Over 700 Save a Child stickers have been
distributed through five public and separate
schools in the Seaforth area. Sponsored by
the Seaforth Junior Farmers. the stickers arc
placed on bedroom windott s of small
children. In case of fire. the fire department
can identify which rooms arc occupied by
children.
Reconstruction of the Bnussels Dam is
underway and was made possible through a
5260.000 federal grant. MP Murray Cardiff
had requested a 5325,000 grant. was turned
down, but recently learned $345,000 was
approved for the project.
JUNE 20
Dave Murray and Faye Carnochan were
recently named Athletes of the. Year at
Seaforth District High School. Other SDHS
athletes were also recognized for their
contribution to athletics.
A former resident of Hensall, Gordon
Moir, 56, of Gorrie, was killed when the light
plane he was piloting crashed into a car on
Highway 87 near Gorrie. A Fergus couple in
the car were also killed. A passenger in the
plane, Warren Ball of Etobicoke, is in serious
condition at University Hospital, London.
Cause of the eras hasn't been determined.
The Seaforth PUC agreed to a five per cent
wage increase for its outside workers. The
raise brings the journeyman rate from $6.60
to $6.93 and from $10.22 to $10.76.
Exeter high school teacher Joanne Young
failed to show up for work on June 11 and her
employer wants to talk to her. Mrs. Young is
in jail after failing to give her name when
arrested at a anti-nuclear demonstration
outside of Ontario Hydro in Toronto.
JUNE 27
The issue of ordaining self -declared
homosexuals in the United Church has
produced as many reactions as there are
ministers and parishioners in the Seaforth
area. No matter what the outcome of the
General Council meeting in August, each
minister says the United Church was right to
tackle the issue.
Lyons Food Market was granted a building
permit for a 4,000 square foot addition. But
Seaforth council was concerned that a vacant
lot beside the store was paved without
provision for drainage. Council felt the
drainage issue should be resolved.
A new ball diamond will be located at the
high school and new tennis court lights will be
installed on high school property. Cost of the
lighting is $8,291.92.
Over 700 meals were served by the
Seaforth Lions Club at their first Huron
Foodfest. The menu featured produce that
was either produced in Huron County or
purchased from county businesses.
JULY 4
The Village of Hensall celebrated its
Centennial celebration in style, The Centen-
nial parade lasted about two hours and had
approximately 200 floats. Five beard winners
were Alphonse Grenier, Harold Knight, Dan
McGlinchey, Bob Baker, and Gerry Neilands.
Canada Day celebrations in Seaforth were
successful although they suffered a bit- from
celebrations in surrounding areas. But about
500 were on hand to watch the fireworks
display.
The Village of Brussels and Morris and
Grey Townships pulled off one of the best
celebrations the three communities have
held. And it was all for the Ontario
bicentennial. Events included a parade.
interdenominational church service. talent
show and a play.
Sales of Wintario tickets almost doubled at
most Seaforth and area stores last week when
Wintario came to town. The show was
televised live from the Seaforth and District
Community Centres,
JULY 11
Marjorie Maloney's failing eyesight has
fofeed_her to retire from her taxi service
which she has been running in Seaforth for
the past 11 years.
The new owner is Bill Little who also owns
Bill's Taxi Service in Mitchell.
Reconstruction work will begin on the
historic Cardno's Opera Hall in Seaforth.
Scaffolding was erected so that construction
work can start. Work is expected to be
complete by Sept.
MP.,{vlurray Cardiff says he's ready for the
Sept d federal election. Other candidates
include Valerie Bolton. NDP: Joe Yundt.
Libertarian, and Bruce McDonald. Liberal.
An Glanville. a 21 •vcar•old Walton area
man is in hospital after a single vehicle
accident. The 1981 Ford truck was demolish-
ed after it went off the road. sailed through
the air and crashed into a river bank at
Grieves Bridge.
JULY 18
The West Branch-Seaforth games ended in

Seaforth on Sunday. Over 130 kids from West
Branch, Michigan, travelled to their sister
city to participate in the games, the first since
1980,
Seaforth councillors will pet a $5 increase
for attending regular council meetings. The
remuneration increases from $90 to $95 for
the Mayor and from $65 to $70 for councillors.
Its the first raise council has given them-
selves since 1982.
Tuckersmith Township council is reluctant
to give its approval for a new landfill site at
the Seaforth lagoon property. Council said
they want more information before making a
decision. One concern is the close proximity
to nearby residences,
Nancy Andreassi was sitting 15 feet from a
willow tree when it was struck by lightning. A
branch was blown off the tree. Mrs.
Andreassi was left shaken by the incident but
was unharmed.
JULY 25
Dublin people showed community spirit as
the town hosted a bi-centennial celebration.
Murray Cardiff, member of parliament of
Huron -Bruce for the last four years was
acclaimed as Progressive Conservative can-
didate for the riding.
The McQuaid sisters of Sea▪ forth, Anne
Marie, Madonna and Carol Anne, continue to
win prizes at area fiddle and stepdancing
competitions. The trio recently won first prize
in the Open Group division in stepdancing in
Fergus. It's the first time the sisters have won
first in this division.
Three people were killed in four separate
accidents in the Seaforth area. A Walton man
died in a tractor rollover and a Seaforth man
died in a traffic accident.
AUGUST 1
Bruce McDonald, a 30 -year-old insurance
broker from Mildmay was picked to take the
Huron -Bruce Liberals to the polls in the Sept.
4 federal election. Voters chose Mr. McDon-
ald over Heather Redick of Zurich on the first
ballot. -
Two wheat fires on Seaforth area farms
during the week were caused by vehicles
driven into the fields. Approximately 15 to 20
acres of grain was lost on the farm of Bob
Dalton and two to three acres of grain lost on
the farm of Rudy Jansen because of the
vehicles.
The Seaforth PUC has agreed with a
proposal from Seaforth council that the entire
roof over the police station and the PUC
building be replaced.
The 1984 federal election has been billed as
one of the most important elections for
Canadians. For young Progressive Conserva-
tive supporters in Huron -Bruce, the election
announcement m ' t the timing was right to
form a Young Pr••;ressive Conservative
(YPC) group in their 'ding.

About 130 descen nts of the late John and
Mary (Nigh) mil h attended the Walsh
family reunion held at the Dublin Park on July
29.
Jennifer Watt and Deb Core, both of
Egmondville are Ontario golf champions.
Miss Watt and Miss Core won the team
championship for the third flight of the
Ontario Junior Girls Championship in King•
ston. They competed agMhs11e5 gitts froth 20
districts.
The Larprom family of Brussels moved to
their very own home and in the same week
became Canadian citizens.
Purchasing a 50 acre farm in Grey
Township and becoming new Canadians was
the realization of a four year dream for the
seven person family.
AUGUST 15
Approximately 200 Walton spectators were
left weak with laughter when local people
formed two sides and attempted to play a
game of baseball, while mounted on the
backs of donkeys.
The event was sponsored by the Walton
Area Sports Club.
Two local girls received a first class reply
from the Queen's lady-in-waiting. The reply
came at the command of Queen Elizabeth 11
herself, to whom the girls had written earlier
in the summer,
Armed with their favorite furry friends, •60
youngsters enjoyed the annual Teddy Bear
Picnic at the Seaforth Public Library.
Children aged three to eight years brought at
least one if not two to enjoy games and
goodies.
The release of the draft copy of the Seaforth
Zoning Bylaw resulted in concerns being
raised about the flood plain within the town.
AUGUST 22
After receiving ' complaints about the
controlled burning at the Seaforth landfill
site, reeve Bill Campbell admitted to council
that the landfill site was an emergency
situation.
Close to 70 residents gathered on Brussels'
main street for" a ribbon -cutting ceremony
commemorating the newly •paved road
The $350.000 project repairs the road that
had been in rough shape for about five years.
Seaforth council decided to build 560 feet of
sidewalk on North Mill Street in addition to
the 1984 sidewalk schedule instead of buying
a chipper after it received a petition signed by
close to 20 ratepayers.
AUGUST 29
A Brussels team won the annual Walton
Squirt ball tournament held at the Walton
Ball Park on the weekend
Brussels won the tournament after defeat-
ingg Brodhagen 4-3. Mitchell 6-0 and Walton
3.2.
Nine contestants enter the race for
Brussels Fair Queen. They were Kim Exel,
Darlene Freeman. Bonnie Evans. Melinda
Hamilton, Patricia Ten Pas. Susan Smith.
Michelle Jones, Peggy McLellan and Kate
Boon.
The Dublin bantam boys baseball team
hosted their first tournament in Dublin on the
weekend.
Ever since the draft cops of the Seaforth
zoning bylaw was released to the public,
three weeks ago. property owners whose
property is shown in flood plain areas of the
town. are concerned that their property may
be devalued. Others see their property as
being virtually worthless.
The draft bylaw shows low lying property
as being either in the Inner Flood Plain zone
(IFP) or Outer Flood 5EPTEp ER one (OFF).
A tornado lasting only minutes wreaked
havoc in the Staffa area around the supper
hour Sunday. Trees were snapped off. hydro
lines were downed and two barns were
severely damaged in the storm.
Being able to vote in the 1984 federal
election held special sentiment for at least
one senior Egmondville resident.
For Verde Cameron the year of the election
coincided with the year of her 90th birthday.
Senior citizens were piepared to cast their
