CWL Christmas party Correspondent CECILIA RYAN 345-2028 The Dec, meeting of the St. Columban Catholic Women's League was held on Dee..4 with a buffet -style supper. The kitchen of the church hall was decorated with Christmas streamers, tinsel, •ornaments, candles and centrepieces on, the tables. Carol Ryan, president welcomed the ladies. Father Cassano said the grace. While the ladies enjoyed- their tea and coffee, the president conducted the meeting. The used clothing that was gathered will go to the Salvation Army in Stratford. Flowers will be given at Christmas to any lady who is • %hut -in. A Christmas card and mass intention will be sent to Joseph Hicknell at St. Peter's Seminary, London. The weather is disinat as the snow is disappearing. My creative thoughts +'have totally vanished just like, the snow,. 1 guess 1 will have to send an' urgent message to Santa and ask for a new thinking cap as mine has worn out. Maybe next week 1 will have worked this problem out — for never am let a loss df words, for tong, I am told. Father Cassano showed members some 1985 calendars which can be purchased. They commemorate the Pope's visit to. Canada. Fpllowing the meeting one of Santa's helpers arrived while several Christmas carrots were being sung. Santa hada little chat with each lady and presented her with a gift before leaving for the North Pole. Correspondence was read by the secretary, Joan Cronin. The ladies decided to raise the National Per Capita Fee to $5 in 1985. This year as in the, past the sick and shut-in members of the CWL will receive a fruit basket. Donations will also be given to the 'Ronald McDonald House in London and to the Africian Relief Fund. Guest speaker was Father Ashton. He was ordained in 1979 and is the Chaplain for the Deaf in the Diocese of London. and tie is stationed at St. Peter's Seminary. Father Ashton says the Mass in Sign Language every Saturday in Chatham, and once a month in Windsor and London. Father Ashton also attends seminars in Sarnia 'every Tuesday • where he instructs and ,interprets for the deaf. There are only six people in Canada who work so ihtensely with the deaf and hard of hearing, and there is only one university. in the world that takes deaf students and that -is • in Washington. - Much to the delight of all in attendance a very special visitor came,' none other than Santa Claushimself, who distributedgifts and made special note of all the interesting requests the ladies had on their Christmas lists. INSTITUTE MEETING Members of Staffa Women's Institute enjoyed a travelogue to Switzerland via Germany and Austria with slides shown 1 and interesting commentary given by Mr. Risi, administrator of the Bluewater Rest Home, Zurich. - Mrs, John Miller presided for the Citizen- ship and Worlds,Affairs meeting of the WI held in the township hail on Nov. 28. Many interesting and humorous answers were given by the 17 members who answered the roll call by naming a old school game, among the answers were tag, hopscotch, fox and goose, enti-anti-over, and pump•pump- pull away. Mrs. Ross Smale presided for the,business when a minute of silence was observed for the late Ruby Reed, a life member of Staffa Women's Institute. Mrs. Lloyd Miller reported on the District executive banquet hosted by Hillcrest Women's lnstrhite reminding everyone about the craft articles for WI days at .the Erland Lee Home in June 1985, also the Federated Women's Institutes of Canadr! Convention to be hosted by Ontario at Western University June 16-20 /85. All members answered a questionnaire regarding Women's Institute work at branch district area and provincial levels. —r FOR .
