SHORT SHOTS by Evelyn Kennedy The mysterious visitors on their "Trick or Treat" calls have come and gone until another year. The chill winds of Halloween night must have discouraged many of the .characters of fantasy land from venturing out. There were not as many as usual abroad. Cold little hands accepted offered treats. There did not appear to have been any imps bent on destruction, *®4e\9* What is this world of our becoming? Daily we learn of murder, rape, assassinations, arson, mob violence and indignities inflicted on innocent people. The assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi shocked the world. One of the few great leaders cut down by extremists. It was perhaps not so unexpected in India for the extremists of the Sikh religion had threatened repeatedly to kill Mrs. Gandhi in retaliation for her order of the bloody assault on the Sikh's holy Golden Temple. In revenge for the assassination Hindu rioters directed their violence, includ- ing lynching, beatings and arson at the Sikhs. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who succeeded his mother said "tis madness must stop". When young Hindus shouted anti -Sikh slogans and other groups raised fists and shouted "Blood for blood" outside the viewing hall where his mother lay in state he quietly told the demonstrators "Don't do this. This is not right." But it went on. Sikh* in Toronto celebrated Mrs. Gandhi's assassi- nation in their temple chanting "Rajiv Gandhi will be the next target." There are men who resent competition from women. One expressed it this way. The pressure is worse in the rat race when you hear the rat behind you is wearing high heels. Do not imagine that children are not aware of what parents say on certain occasions. Home from school one young boy said "Phew, this was a teyrible da. I need a good stiff drink of chocolate milk." No more credit cards, cash, cheques or credit card bills. We will have instead a debit card. A pilot program of this electronic fund transfer system is being planned for early next year. All purchases will be made with a debit card: The money for each transaction will be transferred, almost at once, from our bank account to the account of the retailers. We will be encouraged to visit our friendly banker to arrange for borrowing power. That line of credit could tempt us to spend more than we should, exceeding our borrowing power. We would find our debit card had become a debt card. The interest on that line of credit could well be a high rate. There are times when one could wish that some of these new-fangled electronic gadgets had never been invented. ST.
