Stepping. backwards in fitness search
SWEAT SOCKS
by Heather Mc
wraith
There's nothinglike a week of inactivity to
get the brain jumping to all sorts of
conclusions about everything. More specific-
ally this week I've been berating myself for
my inability to exercise (because of illness)
and have decided the desire td be physically
fit - is driving me crazy. (Those who know me
will probably concede that craziness has
already taken root), I'll probably never reach
the goal I've set out for myself.
Anyways, I'm finding that without my
weekly dosage of exercise I'm jumping to all
sorts of conclusions about myself and about
the varying degrees' of deterioration that
must be taking place in 'my body.
Since my imagination had already run
away with itself and I already saw myself as
the next scientific study of corpulence, and
since I'd already come to my own conclusions
about my physical fitness level probably the
last thing i needed to hear was that my
imaginings were probably closer to the truth
than 1 realized.
•
I just happened, lucky me, to read an
article that told me how acourate my musings
were. It seems that if exercise is not repeated
within a 72 hour period then the initial
exercise is useless. Just what I needed to
hear) The thought was depressing to say the
least. And in reminiscing about my past the
thought is even more depressing. All prior
attempts at achieving peak physical fitness
have probably been virtually useless. Most
likely when i've thought I was taking three
steps forward, I was drowning in a quagmire
of failures. Great,..eh7
When I think about all the aching muscles,
pulled ligaments, sprained ankles, massive
headaches, sweat -drenched clothing, and
hours of sheer exhaustion 1 wonder why I'm
continuing to fight a battle that I'll probably
never win.
I give more than a few minutes of thought
to my record for injury and have to wonder if
this physical fitness is worth the risk. Surely
in the time it'll take for me to surpass the
backward motion I'm now taking and reach
'that high point a lot could -happen to me.
1 can't very easily forget the fact that I've
spent a great majority of my sports "career"
either on crutches, with my arm in a sling or
just hobbling from the examining to xray
room at the local hospital. I wonder too, if, as
the girl my graduating high school class
presented with a year's supply of plaster of
Paris, andfree accommodation for life at the
local hospital, whether 1 ought to expose
myself to such risks.
Anyway, I doubt that recreation is the only
area that will provide a threat to me. I
recognize the fact that I'm a klutz and along
with the outer members of my family have
come to live with it. To this day, whenever l
call home, I get the same well worn greeting,
"What did you do to yourself this time."
But life goes on.
