Representatives of the Huron County Housing Authority presented their annual report at the Nov. meeting of Huron County council. Hay Township Deputy Reeve Tony Bedard questioned housing manager Bill Tuwell on the vacancy at the housing authority s senior citizen units in Zurich. There are 20 units and 10 vacancies. Mr. Bedard said this vacancy was questioned last year and now it is worse. "There is a decrease everywhere," said Mr. Tugwell. "There's not a heck of a lot we can do. He added that the provincial housing ministry won't fund that cost. A seniors' complex in Brussels faced similar problems. Brussels Reeve Cal Krau- ter said local service clubs raised funds and installed an elevator and parking was increased. Zurich Reeve Isadore LaPorte said the Zurich facility faces competition from an apartment unit down the street in "beautiful setting" where rent is "$80 month less". • Tree Removal and Trimming • Cabling and Bracing • Cavity Treatment • Stump Removal Serving the area since 1954 Geo. Canadians unaware of benefits of R.R BY HARRY L. MARDON A surprising number of Canadians are completely unaware of the benefits provided by a Registered Retirement Income Fund ( RRIF). If'they have heard about it, they usually confuse it with a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). In fact, the only connection between them is that both are Ottawa -approved methods of providing your- self with retirement income. The RRSP is a means of accumulating money for your retirement on a tax-free basis. However, when your RiJSP matures --or at an earlier point in time--,ygwcan "roll over" your RRSP funds into, n 4 gegistered Retirement Income Fund without paying any tax. The RRIF will prqvide you with income to supplement that you receive from the Canada or Quebec Pension Plan, the old ape pension and other pension income you obtain from your pre -retirement employment. All too often Canadians when they reach retirement roll over (or convert) their RRSP money into an annuity. Annuities provide you with a set amount of income for as long as the particular contract sets out in its +various provisions. But you lose control ,of your money the moment you buy the'a'iinuity. The payments from an annuity will be a set amount. That means that over the years the purchasing power of your annuity payments will decline, because of inflation. On the other hand, if you invest your RRSP funds in a RRIF there is every likelihood that your capital will grow over the lifetime of the plan. Although the payments out of a RRIF in the .initial +years of your retirement will be' lower than from an annuity, they will become greater later on. And the real beauty of a RRIF is that you remain in control of your RRIF money, unlike what happens if you have an annuity. Basically, you keep your capital and spend On the left) Bill and Kim. the twins, baby Sarah. They've revitalized their fum.fe,ewith an electric plenum heater: it's one bb the most economi- cal ways to cut lfvinter fuel bills. Md they've turned'the drafty old attic room intoa warm nursery with insula- tion and inexpensive, easy -to -install baseboard heaters. There's a sepa- rate thermostat, so baby's room can be kept at exactly the right temper- ature without overheating the rest of the house On the right? Mike and Stella - empty -nesters. They've installed an add-on electric heat pump to help save money and heat their home in winter and they're looking forward to the comfort of air conditioning next summer. it was easy to add, cuts their heating costs and adds to the value of their home Electric heat provides home- owners with many options for either total or partial conversion. Whatever your needs, there's an electric system that's just right to help you cut costs, without cutting comers on comfort. Once you understand the flexibility of electric heat, other heats just don't look so hot, Write to Ontario Hydro and ask for your free booklet about satisfied families who installed electric heat. This means that you select each year just how much income you want to take from your RRIF, within government -set limits. When it comes to selecting a RRIF in which to invest, you should be wary of any extravagant -sounding performance claims by the seller of a RRIF. It is advisable to consider carefully just how much investment risk you can live with comfortably. For example, if you are considering putting your RRSP funds into a mutual fund RRIF, you should probably invest in a mortgage or a bond fund. This is especially Important if your health is not all that good and you're about' to .reach age 70 -or so. Although mortgage and bond funds will fluctuate in terms of rate of return, over the long term they should keep you ahead of inflation. You also may purchase a mutual fund RRIF where the assets are invested in equities, or common stocks and preferred shares. This kind of fund is bound to be volatile.
