Celebration of youth
La Boheme comes to Blyth
Some of the finest young singers in Canada
today will raise their voices in a celebration of
youth as the Canadian Opera Company
Ensemble returns to Blyth -with Puccini's La
Boheme.
To be presented at Blyth Memorial Hall on
Sunday, Nov.18, La Boheme captures the
very essence of that innocent age when life,.
with all its 'delights and disappointments, is
just befginning to unfold,
Puccini's best -loved and most theatrical
opera will transport audiences to Paris, that
mecca of struggling young artists. Lavish sets

Singer -songwriter Shirley Eikhard will
perform in concert at Blyth Memorial Hall on
Nov. 9. The concert is part of a three concert
and costumes designed especially, for this
tour will set the scene for one of the great love
stories of opera.
Set in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the
1830's, La Boheme tells the tory of the
bohemian artists, musicians, oets and
philosophers who filled their lives with
gaiety, song, dance and romance. The story
centres on the poet Rodolpho and the frail
seamstress Mimi, who share little money or
possessions. but boundless love and dreams.
The Blyth production will be seen in English,
with piano accompaniment.

Festival which began with a Sylvia Tyson
concert. in Aept. and will conclude with the
traditional band Eritage on March 29,
Shirley Eikhard started performing na-
tionally at the ape of 13. At that time, Anne
Murray said, .Shirley already has more
talent in her little finger than most artists will
ever develop."
Since then, Shirley has made a name for
herself as a versatile songwriter, performer
and recording artist. She has garnered two
Juno awards, recorded three albums and
appeared on over 300 radio and television
shows in the last 12 years, including two
Anne 'Murray specials, numerous Tommy
Hunter shows and a Hagood Hardy special in
1976.
In recent years, Shirley's music has grown
from her country and folk music roots to
encompass the jazz and blues tradition as
well. For the Nov. 9 concert she will perform a
mixture of her own compositions, many of
which have hit the "top 10" in radio play,
along with some classic country and folk
tunes. Shirley will be backed up by a three
