Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins, is how
Jeff Gemmell, 12 of RR 2, Kippen,
advertises that he hes pumpkins for sale.
Though he's only 12, Jeff is a veteran
pumpkin grower, having grown the huge
orange vegetables since he was in. kinder-
garten. And his interest in pumpkins is
obvious --to make money.
"I usually sell about 175 pumpkins every
year, but this year is my best crop ever --I
grew about 200. And so far I've sold about
5100 worth," says Jet
Having grown pumpkins for six years,
Jeff is finding that many of his customers
are repeat customers. And most buy
pumpkins for two reasons only --to make
pumpkin pie or jack -o -lanterns. His mother
makes pumpkin pie, but Jeff says it isn't his
favorite -cherry is.
"I'm not sure how I. got interested in
pumpkins. H think we just had too many
pumpkins in the garden one year so I just
started selling them. 1 put a sign up at the
road, 'Pumpkins for Sale."
There's no great secret to growing a good
croft of pumpkins, says Jeff.
"I plant the seeds in the spring and weed
them about twice in the summer. Then I
have to p ick and wash them --and that's a
long job. They get pretty heavy, so I use the
loader a lot."
Jeff has tried to grow giant pumpkins --
the 500 pound variety --but he never had
much luck. The biggest was about 100
pounds.

We seem to see in a soft dim light
A face we love the best
Recalling her as the sults last rays,
Go down in the far off west.
We miss her more as time goes on,
We can never close our hearts,
And the lamp of our love still burns,
Her heart the truest in all the world
Her loves the best to recall.
None on earth can take her place
She is still the dearest of all.
Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by
Grant and family. 25-44x1
