(WBssink photo) CLASSIFIEDS pi Pum ins , Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Pumpkins, is how Jeff Gemmell, 12 of RR 2, Kippen, advertises that he hes pumpkins for sale. Though he's only 12, Jeff is a veteran pumpkin grower, having grown the huge orange vegetables since he was in. kinder- garten. And his interest in pumpkins is obvious --to make money. "I usually sell about 175 pumpkins every year, but this year is my best crop ever --I grew about 200. And so far I've sold about 5100 worth," says Jet Having grown pumpkins for six years, Jeff is finding that many of his customers are repeat customers. And most buy pumpkins for two reasons only --to make pumpkin pie or jack -o -lanterns. His mother makes pumpkin pie, but Jeff says it isn't his favorite -cherry is. "I'm not sure how I. got interested in pumpkins. H think we just had too many pumpkins in the garden one year so I just started selling them. 1 put a sign up at the road, 'Pumpkins for Sale." There's no great secret to growing a good croft of pumpkins, says Jeff. "I plant the seeds in the spring and weed them about twice in the summer. Then I have to p ick and wash them --and that's a long job. They get pretty heavy, so I use the loader a lot." Jeff has tried to grow giant pumpkins -- the 500 pound variety --but he never had much luck. The biggest was about 100 pounds.
