THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 24,
SHORT SHOTS

Remember that old and true saying "There
is some goad in the worst of us and some bad
in the best of us." Look not for the faults of
others. Realize and admire their good
qualities.

William Davis declared last week his
intention to leave politics. He will retire after
13 years of ser+fice as Premier of Ontario, and
leader of the Progressive Conservative party.
He kept his own party members, and others,
in a state of confusion for some time. They
were uncertain if the expected announcement
would be of an election or his retirement.
That was rather to be expected. He has
always been somewhat reticent concerning
his intentions. He said he will continue to
represent the riding of Brampton, as he has
for 25 years, until the next election. Tears
were evident as he made the announcement.

again. He said, in .his first words from
Challenger,'"I completed all the objectives
today of the Canadian experiments scheduled
for day one off the mission." He was obviously
delighted to be able to make that statement.
Canadian space program officials raved
about the quantity and quality of his video
recordings. They were very pleased with the
successful performance of the Canadian built
Canadarm. Congratulations are due to Mr.
Garneau as are those responsible for the
proved reliability of the Canadarm.

Can you imagine this happening these
days? Some years ago a man parked his car,
on Sunday, in a very tight space. About to
leave, the starter would not work. Despairing
of getting it out and started himself, he called
a service station. The call was relayed to the
owner's home. He arrived promptly, got the
car out and running. When asked "How

"Hallowed" which bears special significance
to Hallowe'en.
Prior to the Roman invasion of England the
Celts or native occupants of England,
Scotland and Wales celebrated the festival of
Dec. 31. On that date the spirits or ghosts of
the dead were supposed toreturn to earth and
wander about; hence the masks, costumes
and spooky creations.
After the arrival of the Romans the date
was changed to Oct. 31 and sculptured
pumpkins with lights and candles and apple
dunking were added to the festival.
The following day, November 1, is "All
Saints Day" and has been of note since the
seventh century. It is observed as a church
feast day, all -hallows, Christ has overcome
all.•
