The Huron Expositor, 1984-10-24, Page 13WALTON AND AREA THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 24, SHORT SHOTS ' by Evelyn Kennedy Remember that old and true saying "There is some goad in the worst of us and some bad in the best of us." Look not for the faults of others. Realize and admire their good qualities. mmmmmmm William Davis declared last week his intention to leave politics. He will retire after 13 years of ser+fice as Premier of Ontario, and leader of the Progressive Conservative party. He kept his own party members, and others, in a state of confusion for some time. They were uncertain if the expected announcement would be of an election or his retirement. That was rather to be expected. He has always been somewhat reticent concerning his intentions. He said he will continue to represent the riding of Brampton, as he has for 25 years, until the next election. Tears were evident as he made the announcement. ***tit*** Marc Garneau, our first Canadian astro- naut to venture into outerspace is safely home allowe'en (Continued frpm page Al2) Jeffery, Richard and Robbie of Tavistock; Mr. and Mrs. Larry Mayberry, Marilyn, Kimberly and Darryl of Londesboro; Mr. and Mrs, Howard Zettler and Sherry of RR 1 Chepstow. Some years ago a man parked his car, on Sunday, in a very tight space. About to leave, the starter would not work. Despairing of getting it out and started himself, he called a service station. The call was relayed to the owner's home. He arrived promptly, got the car out and running. When asked "How (please turn to page A181 discussed "Hallowed" which bears special significance to Hallowe'en. Prior to the Roman invasion of England the Celts or native occupants of England, Scotland and Wales celebrated the festival of Dec. 31. On that date the spirits or ghosts of the dead were supposed toreturn to earth and wander about; hence the masks, costumes and spooky creations. After the arrival of the Romans the date was changed to Oct. 31 and sculptured pumpkins with lights and candles and apple dunking were added to the festival. The following day, November 1, is "All Saints Day" and has been of note since the seventh century.
