The Huron Expositor, 1984-10-24, Page 9THE JUNCTION THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 24, 1984 - A9 Join a club, get involved BY ELIZABETH OVEN 'There's nothing to do at noon hour!' is a common complaint heard among many students of SD}IS. Well, I'm here to tell y ou that that's a lot of nonsense. The following is a list of things students could do at noon. They can participate in intramural activities, watch the 'movie of the week', dedicate spare time to a club such as drama, chess, etc., complete homework, read, wander around town, eat (naturally), play tennis, talk to friends, count lockers, stand in halls and stare (many people already do), sleep, do grocery shopping, etc. My list has dwindled from practical to Students eniy pl, y Inc ' IISTIINE PRESZCATOR On Oct. 12, some of the students from Seaforth District High School went to see a production of Romeo and Juliet at the Shakespearean Festival in Stratford. The tickets went on sale a week before the play was performed and were sold out. People who were not early enough in getting their tickets were disappointed that they were unable to go. The play was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. impractical. And 1 do realize that maybe there aren't very many things to keep students busy at noon. 1 don't know about you, but I always • manage to 'waste' my time effectively. But, if, vnll're r• -911v rlpcnerate. ItaP vonr imagina- tion. Invent a new, interesting, stimulating and promising club. Or, even better yet, join The Junction! I'm sure we could find you something to do at noon!. Successful workshop h Id Teachers and their spouses from Perth. Huron, Grey and Bruce counties attended a very successful Personal Planning Workshop on Oct. 12 and 13. The activities were held at Goderich District Collegiate Institute and focussed on the personal and financial aspects which should be considered by an individual planning for retirement. Psychological considerations were pre- sented by Dr. Havelka of King's College, U.W.O. and alternatives to teaching were discussed by Dr. John Marshall of Self -Man- agement Resources Incorporated, of Toronto. Other sessions included estate planning,4 tax strategies and investment and savings as well as addressing major concerns in life planning and general financial and legal planning to ensure a happy, well -adjusted nnrt cn..nro -tirnm rpt Sponsorship for the day was provided by the Ontario Teachers' Federation and the Teachers' Superannuation Commission along with the local federation affiliates of the Women Teachers' Associations, the Ontario Public School Teachers' Federations, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federa- tions, the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Associations and the Superannuated Teach- ers' of Ontario from Huron, Perth, Bruce and Grey counties. - All sessions were well attended and comments from participants were very positive. Many exx, pressed regret that such concentrated advil:e and direction had not been available at an earlier stage in their lives, but said they planned to use what they had learned to best advantage in the years that remained before retirement. Timing is a problem in writing news BY PETER DOYEN There are many problem's with writing a sports column for a weekly newspaper. For myself, there's at least one. , The action 1 report and the facts 1. relate to you are current events (some might even describe them•as news) to me, right now, on Oct. 16. However, by the time this news is presented to the area via the Huron Expositor, whatever I have written will be old news. For instance, something interesting hap- pened to our volleyball team recently. The schedule of tournaments we were following Was different from that of other teams. Our schedule told us we would play Oct. 16 and Oct. 18. According to the organizers, Monday and Wednesday were our game days. So instead of doing such things as driving spikes over the volleyball net all day Monday, we Sprfshots from rYPETER uIVEN "Two or more beasts of burden harnessed together..." That, if one is to believe the latest Canadian edition of the Funk and Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary, is the definition of 'team'. Trained in the use of dictionaries, however, 1 let my eyes wander down the page to find a more satisfying definition. But no one knows how this faux -pas will be resolved. Will we have to exhaust our bodies during tomorrow's tournament tq make up the lost games? Will another tournament be arranged by the administration? Will they unfairly make us forfeit those games and our chance for the play-offs? It's a mystery....to- day, Qct: 16. When this edition of the Expositor hits the newsstands, you can bet this dilemma will already have been solved. If it's a favorable solution then we will probably already be involved in the playoffs. But don't bother worrying about this situation, it's over. To find out how it was dealt with, you'll have to wait till next week and read about it in another column. S the meaning of 'sport' and we form the kind of vague definition that is needed for a description of the activity usually seen on the SDHS gym floor during lunch hour.° The common gym floor activity is officially called 'intra -mural competition'. Upon enter- ing the school in grade nine, each student is randomly chosen to represent one of four 'houses' or teams within the school. Thus, the student body is divided into groups. These 'houses' are pitted against each other in the various competitions (including soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball and others) scheduled throughout the year. According to the dictionary, such intra- mural events could be described as "a set of workers, or players, competing in a particular game for diversion." According to many students, these events are more' aptly referred to as "bush league", "basic", or just plain "dumb." Despite these opinions though, many healthy rivalries have emerged this year. As the teams struggle against each other on the basketball courts, Phoenix House has the early lead in points, followed clbsely by the usually lowly Taurus and Aurora Borealis Houses. Comet House, it seems has gotten off to a slow start, and is lagging well behind the leaders. Campaign planned BY PAT JEW The student's council is planning a Hallowe'en dance. Though the date has not yet been set, we are assuming it will be on Oct. 31. A good turn -out is expected as with the last dance. The next event planned by the student's council is a Targe scale cookie campaign. About 1200 boxes will be ordered. This event is to take place after the Nov. exams. Hopefully, we cart have a list of events planned by the student's council for you in the future. 20% DISCOUNT on Wonder Bra PALATI -HOSE Oct. 24 -Nov. 3 NOW $ 1 . 52. 80 RE2G. 5 SCeLm &t 4/fizoi.
