But, they never read for the purpose of helping, others while benefiting themselves. That is, until the introduction of the Multiple Sclerosis Mystery .Sleuth Read.A-Thon program. This program has been carried out in the schools throughout Ontario for the past few years and has become very successful, so much so, that $900,000. was raised for MS research in Ontario Iasi year. To more clearly explain this program we --- must first understand what MS means. Multiple means many and Sclerosis means scars and these many scars affect the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). MS interrupts the brain's ability to control walking, talking, seeing and other important functions of the afflicted. -The funds for this research is vital as scientists have not yet determined a cause or cure for this crippling disease which strikes young adults between the age of 15 to 50. The read-a-thon is a program set up to encourage students to read and in so doing raise money for MS research. It sounds rather vague but it is really quite simple. There are walk-a-thons, skate-a-thons, Jason Unlac, Kevin Ernst, Matthew Megens The Senior team Includes, Mike Murray Brian Cook, Jason Horan, Rem Murray, Sean Cook, Bill Van Bakel. But this fundraiser has different motives. Students get sponsor's who contribute a certain amount per book read by the student within a one month period. And alLmoney goes to help research.- This. esearch:This• program creates motivation for the students to read. At the same time it develops their reading skills and helps to broaden their knowledge and increase their appreciation of books. Through a more eager awareness of books, they discover the many areas available such as history, fact and fiction,• art, drama, autobiography, etc. They can explore, dream and create famous places and people. And they, can expand their vocabulary as well as their writing skills. Last year, the students of St. Patrick's, Dublin., had 104 students read 1123 books to raise a'total of $1,083.47. This year, Mary Vezeau of the MS Society of Canada gave an informative presentation to the students, not only about the fundraising, but gave a better understand- ing of MS and what it means to help those who suffer from MS -- they give hope.
