Some children read because they like to,
others because they have to. But, they never
read for the purpose of helping, others while
benefiting themselves. That is, until the
introduction of the Multiple Sclerosis
Mystery .Sleuth Read.A-Thon program.
This program has been carried out in the
schools throughout Ontario for the past few
years and has become very successful, so
much so, that $900,000. was raised for MS
research in Ontario Iasi year.
To more clearly explain this program we
--- must first understand what MS means.
Multiple means many and Sclerosis means
scars and these many scars affect the central
nervous system (brain and spinal cord). MS
interrupts the brain's ability to control
walking, talking, seeing and other important
functions of the afflicted.
-The funds for this research is vital as
scientists have not yet determined a cause or
cure for this crippling disease which strikes
young adults between the age of 15 to 50.
The read-a-thon is a program set up to
encourage students to read and in so doing
raise money for MS research. It sounds
rather vague but it is really quite simple.
There are walk-a-thons, skate-a-thons,

dance-a-thonst all with the purpose to help
fund clubs er youth groups. But this
fundraiser has different motives. Students
get sponsor's who contribute a certain
amount per book read by the student within
a one month period. And alLmoney goes to
help research.-
This.
esearch:This• program creates motivation for the
students to read. At the same time it
develops their reading skills and helps to
broaden their knowledge and increase their
appreciation of books.
Through a more eager awareness of
books, they discover the many areas
available such as history, fact and fiction,•
art, drama, autobiography, etc. They can
explore, dream and create famous places
and people. And they, can expand their
vocabulary as well as their writing skills.
Last year, the students of St. Patrick's,
Dublin., had 104 students read 1123 books to
raise a'total of $1,083.47.
This year, Mary Vezeau of the MS Society
of Canada gave an informative presentation
to the students, not only about the
fundraising, but gave a better understand-
ing of MS and what it means to help those
who suffer from MS -- they give hope.
Mrs. Vezeau said that all participants who
signed up and completed the read-a-thon
program wilt be eligible for an autographed

Pre -fabricated
frames stolen
Seaforth had another quiet weekend
according to its police chief.
"Maybe it's the lull before the storm,"
said Chief Hal Claus about the decreased
criminal activity Seaforth has experienced in
recent weeks.
This week police received only one 're ort
of a theft, from Glen Chesney. The eft
occurred at the rear of a garage do Railway
Street, owned by Frank Kling Limited.
The theft. which occurred sometime
between Oct. 17 and 20, involved the
disappearance of eight pre -fabricated build-
ing frames. The frames, which were built last
winter by Conestoga students, are eight feet
by eight feet in size and valued at $400.
Police say there are no suspects in the
theft.
