Arthritis affects young and old
While arthritis does affect many older
people, it is not just a disease of the old. Men
and women of any age can get it and there are
more than 30,000 children in Canada under
the age of 15 who have this disease.
Teenagers are also susceptible.
More than 115 different types of arthritis
have been identified and while there is no
sexual preference there are two types that are
more common in young women; Systemic
Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus) and Rheuma-
toid Arthritis.
Lupus is a chronic Rheumatic Disease
which causes damage through inflammation
of many tissues of the body. As well, lupus
increases the chances of kidney, heart, lung
and central nervous sytem malfunction.
Primarily, women between the ages of 20
and 40 are affected and the occurrance is
eight to 10 times more frequent in women
than in men. More than 25,000 Canadians are
currently affected by this disease.
While there is no cure, lupus can be
controlled.
Another rheumatic disease that most often
affects women, is Rheumatoid Arthritis. it
causes inflammation and fever. While it
generally affects the hands, wrists and knees,
the whole body can be affected.
