Three way race for Perth warden
For the first time in at least 20 years, Perth
County Council has a three way race for the
position of warden.
Three reeves announced at the Oct. session
of county council that they would seek the
position of warden for 1985. The warden is
elected annually by his peers to serve as the
head of county council. The 1985 Perth
warden will be chosen on Thursday, Dec. 6.
Clerk -treasurer Jim Bell said it is the first
time in the 20 years he has been a county
employee that he has seen more than two
people seeking the wardenship at one time.
The three are, Fullerton Reeve Oliver
r 1ctntosn, mansnara Reeve Ron Denham
and Ellice Reeve Fred Knechtel.
This is Reeve Mclntosh's second attempt
at seeking the warden's chair. He ran
unsuccessfully last year against current
warden Glynn Coghlin of Elma Township.
Reeve McIntosh, 57, has been busy for the
past two years as chairman of the Spruce
Lodge board of management and serves in
the' same capacity on Spruce Lodge's
non-profit corporation.
He has been reeve of Fullarton since 1980

Oct. is a month
of highs and lows
.JOAN CRONIIN

Holiday weekends are great for many
people, but not me.
I'm not quite sure how to explain last weeks
absence of MY column. 1 would like to say that
I took a week off, but in all reality, the
deadline time and! were only about two days
apart and 1 was. the one not ready.
No doubt you heard it said that the faster 1
go. the behinder 1 get. We did enjoy
Thanksgiving with family. And, 1 am certain
everyone else in the community had an
equally happy time.
Oct. is a very moody month. One
experiences an ultimate high when they look
about at the gorgeous scenery. 1 often think of
jhe fall colors as a painters paradise end a
photographers heaven. The breathtaking
beauty of the trees ablaze with color is
indescribable in words. Maybe that's where
the expression, 'a picture is worth a thousand
words came from.
But this month also leaves one quite
depressed as the leaves fall and the cold
barren branches of the trees remain. The
flowers are removed and shrubs are covered
or bound in preparation for winter. The days
keep getting shorter and the long cold windy
nights set the scene for reading a good book
while curled up on a big comfortable chair in
front of the fireplace. 1 m not too sure how 1
will achieve this as 1 don't have a fireplace -
maybe I will just put my feet on the heating
pad or hot water bottle and pretend.
The baseball bats and equipment has all
been put to rest and the world series is over.
Now we have the hockey equipment strewn
all over the house. Hockey is always
associated with the ice arena, but a great
many enjoyable hours are spent out on a
driveway, street or school yard as youngsters
engage in the game of street hockey.
There are no fans, no referees, no pressure
and no high stakes. Just a group of
youngsters having fun.
But now, we have the leaves to rake each
day as the trees are far from being completely
bare. The children just love to frolic in the
leaves and build make believe mountains and
houses. The children are also busy planning
and preparing their Halloween costumes for
school parties and trick or treating
it is very hard to believe that Halloween
time is almost here but then Christmas is only
about nine weeks away. That fact is almost as
scary as Halloween.
