Blyth Festival
Wondering what to do when you're waiting
in line at the bank, grocery store, bus stop, or
anywhere else?
If you're Bill Russell, and you brought your
string along, you can amuse the world (dnd
yourself) by creating a witch's hat, Jacob's
ladder, a man climbing a tree and a dozen
other designs using just your fingers and that
piece of string Bill Russell, who appears Oct.
13 at Blyth Memorial Hall, is a children's
entertainer whose specialty is string games
and music from his native Louisiana.
. His concert is the first of four children's
concerts offered by the Blyth Festival this fall
and next spring. Tickets for the four concert
series are $10, single tickets are $4.50. Both
series and single tickets care available by
calling the Festival office.
Bill Russell was born in Baton Rouge,.
Louisiana and came to Canada In 1966.
"When 1 arrived, he says, "people in
Montreal wouldn't believe there were really
French-speaking people in Louisiana." So 1
started singing my Cajun songs....I've
learned from my work in schools and libraries
what works, what is fun, what the kids like,
what they can pick up quickly, even if they
hardly know any French to begin with....any-
one can sing along."
The Cajuns of Louisiana are descended
from the Acadian settlers who migrated south
from Canada's east coast, Bill has also
recently released a children's album, entitled
"Zing, Zang, Sol", complete with an
educational booklet with directions for eight
games and dances.
• The next children's event at the Blyth
Festival will be Mermaid Theatre's presenta-
tion of Just So Stories on Nov. 17. The
children's series will resume in Mar. with the
traditional band, Erita e, on Mar. 30 and
concludes with story -teller Helen Porter on
May 4. More information on any of these
events, or on the Blyth Festival's fall events
for adults, is available by calling 523-9300.

plowing competition at the International
Plowing Match near Teviotdale on Saturday.
Runner up was Ken Ferguson of Stouffville.
The two plowmen will compete in the
Canadian Championship Plowing competi-
tion in New Brunswick in 1985. The winner of
that competition advances to the world
plowing competition.
Ontario Champion Horse Plowman was
Andrew MacRobbie of Mount Forest. Runner
up was Ross Miller of Sunderland.
Manager of the IPM, Bob McMann says he
was exceptionally pleased with this year's
plowing match. Mr. McMann is with the
OMAF office in Guelph and is secretary -
manager -treasurer of the Ontario Plowmen's
Association.
"Our attendance was great, -greater than
any other IPM in the last five years. The
record was set in Huron County in 1978," he
says. wI.
The conservation tillage prograY7t was a
first at the IPM this year. It waaha pilot
project, a project that will be at future
matches says Mr. McMann.
"We received favorable comments on the
project. It's something that's innovative.
Conservation tillage is something that
reflects todays need in agriculture."
There were approximately 140 plowmen at
the IPM. The plowmen were pleased with the
soil. though they couldn't plow on opening
day because of rain.
And they were pleased because there was
only a minimum number of stones," says Mr.
McMann.
