Mr. Campbell reiterated the decision of
Ontario Hydro to adopt the recommendation
of the energy board to raise its rates 8.6 per
cent In the coming year. Although the
increase exceeds the current rate of inflation,
Mr. Campbell said it could mean a lower
increase in rates in future years.
"We'd like to see the increase at less, but
by spending the money now, we are setting
the stage for less increase in the rates later,
he said.
Mr. Campbell said that there were certain
costs that had to be passed onto the
consumers, costs that arose because of high
interest rates and the declining value of the
Canadian dollar. Other problems within 'the
Huron -Bruce
Liberals acclaim
Murray Elston
Huron -Bruce Liberals acclaimed Murray
Elston as their candidate in the next
provincial election at a nomination meeting
Oct. 4 in Lucknow. Mr. Elston has been the
riding's representative at Queen's Park for
almost four years.
Ho will faco Norma Peterson of tho New
Democrats and Bill Thomson of the Conserv-
atives when Premier William Davis decides
to call the election.
In accepting the nomination, Mr. Elston
told the 250 Liberals that he wants to continue
to serve the people of iduron-Bruce as he has
done during his "term at the Ontario
legislature. Ho said the appreciation from the
people of the riding for the work he has done
and their support has encouraged him to seek
the Huron -Bruce seat again. He said the
ridings in this arca have a tradition of sending
people to the legislature who want to work for
tho betterment of individuals.
"As good as we have it here, there are
always ways to make it better." he said.
Mr. Elston said he wants to speak up for
farmers. He wants to make sure that area
farmers are no longer at a disadvantage
when marketing their products, because of
programs in other provinces which subsidize
farmers' cost of production, giving them a
competitive ed a in the marketplace. We
produce as as any other farmers in the
country an we cannot continue without
government support, he said.
"We have been struggling to get the ear of
the, "asphalt farmer" and we have to fight
long and hard with people so firmly
entrenched as this government is." said
Elston referring to the minister of agriculture
Dennis Timbrel and his Conservative col-
leagues in the Tory caucus.
Mr. Elston said he intends to work for
people who do not have the opportunity to
work as many do in Huron -Bruce. He said he
was pleased to see the release of 53.5 million
fn BILD funding for the steam pipeline to
serve the Bruce Energy,Centre. Elston said
the pipeline has the potential to develo
Industrial diversification in this riding which
has been lacking for so long.
He said he is also committed to the
development of programis to foster growth of
fuel alcohol production.
The Huron -Bruce MPP said he wants to
work to provide the ability for people to
expand their dreams so that the young people
of the riding can stay and work here in a part
of the country we all love so dearly. e
cannot continue to export this valuable
resource, he said.
Mr. Elston said he is also committed to
prey! , ' job skills training to permit people
to take jobs that wW become available in
the 80s. And he anticipates a hard fight in title
election.
Mr. Elston told his fellow Liberals he
intends to make the preservation of the rural
voice in the Legislature an important issue in
the election cam
"We mast holdhigh the qualities of reform
and send back a Liberal representative from
Huron -Bruce." he said.
"We're trying to be as socially responsible
as possible by not taking the most costive
course."
Mr. Campbell said he was encouraged by
the progress in the energy department and
said he expects to see great things from
Ontario Hydro in the next five years. It will be

more productive and therefore more competi-
tive, he said.
"From the restructuring that's going of
now, we should be better able to deal with)
challenge in the future. And, if the current+
trend is any indication, the consumer can took!
forward to solid progress in Hydro in th
coming years," he said.
Needs of Hydro consumers should be considered
Members of the Ontario Municipal Electric
Association (OMEA) were recently told last
week that they had to first consider the needs
of their consumers if they wanted to succeed
in the marketplace.
Paul Vyrostko, a marketing manager with
Ontario Hydro, told nearly 150 people at the
annual meeting of the OMEA's District Six in
Seaforth, that they needed to look at the
overall system and come up with things that
could be done to make better use of their
commodity and better satisfy the customer.
"Of course rates are the key issue to
marketing," said Mr. Vyrostko, "and we
have to strive to keep our future rates down."
Mr. Vyrostko suggested the OMEA come
up with alternative plans to reduce costs to
the consumer. He suggested that marketers
come up with plans of substitution and
conservation for the consumers and that they

Mr. Vyrostko said there are three ways to
market a product. First, he said there has to
be public awareness on the part of the
marketer; second, a show of committment to
the public; and third, visibility in the
marketplace.
