PLOWING IS what the International Plowing
• Match le all about. There were a number of
competitions Including horse plowing, and
Antique tractor plowing. This turn of the
century steam engine, owned,by Sherwood
Hume of RR 1, Milton, was a favorite among
New programs for beef
and sheep producers
A new plan will be of interest to cow -calf,
stocker/slaughter and sheep producers.
Outlined below are a few of the details
concerning the types of assistance available
to producers from the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food.
All cow -calf producers should identify
their cows and calves so they can participate
in the performance testing under the beef
herd improvement program. Producers will
receive 525 per weaning weight and 520 per
yearling weight for heifers.
Eligible producers will also be able to
receive 51,500 grant for capital facilities
and further assistance will be available for
herd health, calf preconditioning, forage
analysis and enterprise analysis.
Under the stocker/slaughter portion of the
program, producers will have to weigh cattle
at one to two month intervals and belong to a
management club to be eligible for
assistance. A grant of 52 per weight to a
maximum of 5750 per year will be available
to producers.
As well, eligible producers can get further
assistance for capital facilities, forage
testing, herd health, and enterprise analy-
sis.
Sheep producers should also identify their
sheep in the flock so they can participate in
the lamb weighing program. For each 50 -day
weight and each 100 -day weight, a producer
can receive a $1 grant. -
Further to that, eligible producers can get
assistance for estrus control, pregnancy
examination, forage testing, herd health,
enterprise analysis and up to a 55,000 grant
for capital facilities.
To assist producers with this program, a
new Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food staff member will be located in the
Stratford Agricultural Office to cover Huron
and Perth counties. One of this person's first
jobs will be to organize the county
management clubs which will play an
integral part in the program. Membership In
the management clubs is compulsory to
qualify for the grants.
