Four new holes challenge golfers

This Saturday the Seaforth Gulf and
Country Club's Annual Men's. Invitational
Golf Tournament is underway with the tee
closed from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. A field of
about 100 golfers will play 18 holes for the
Commercial Hotel Trophy for low gross over
the field and the Shorty Munro Memorial
Trophy for low net over the field. This year
the competition is wide open since tan Doig,
the winner for the last two years has turned
.pro, and will be unable to defend his title. An
added twist this year is the addition of 4 new
. holes to the layout giving the golfers some
variety and additional challenges. Tee off
times begin shortly after 7 on Saturday
morning and continue all day.

ON THE GREENS
There will be some fine golfers challenging
for the trophy including former pro and
Canadian Amateur Champion Kelly Roberts
of Sunningdale, and top amateurs Bob
Bradley from Oshawa, Pete Hutchison from
Sarnia and Donny White from London Hunt,
not to mention our own Ontario Seniors
Champion Ken Doig Sr. Along with many
local golfers we also have a good contingent
from Bermuda, as well as golfers from as far
away as Delawar Pontiac, and Winnipeg. The

Dave Garrick has won the Sills Trophy as
the Junior Boys Match Play Champion for
1984. Dave defeated both Todd Doig and Ray
Anstett in a round robin final to take the
championship,
in the men's Match play for the Don Eaton -
Brad Smith trophy Terry Johnston defeated
Bill Weber 3 and 2 to gain a berth in the final.
Terry is waiting for the matches between
John Longstaff and Karl Teichert, and Phil
Hoggarth and Gord Scott to be completed
before he'll know who his opponent will be.
The Ladies Match Play Championship Gail
Price awaits the winner between Barbara
Scott and Linda Gridzak. Cathy Ellibtt has
already earned a spot in the final.
The final round of the club championship
was played in the rain on Sunday with Ken
Doig Sr. the low gross winner. Greg Core was
second.
All youngsters who have their name down
to caddy on Saturday should come out to the
pro shop Thursday after school to receive
some instructions for Saturday's tourney.

ATV Supercross race in Thorndale
attracts local competitors
CRC Productions in conjunction with the
Thorndale Fair Board presents the ATV
Supercross race being held at the fair-
grounds. Gates open at 6:00 and the racing
begins at 8:00,
See high reving three wheel and four wheel
machines take on the man-made course
under the lights Friday, Sept. 21.
Come and see the crazy kamikahzies from
the North take on the boys in the South.
Watch these machines fly through the air
over the double jumps and sliding around the
wide open corners.

after round one Steve Beane of Brucefteld is
in sixth spot with four points in the 1.75-200
solid class. He is trailing leader, Gord Inglis
of London by 11 points.
in thes 200-225 modified, Bert Middegal of
Blyth in first place with 15 points. He is
three Points ahead of the closest competitor.
Seaforth horse wins

Despite an afternoon drizzle that slowed
the racing down considerably, all 10 races ent
as scheduled at Clinton Raceway on Sunday
afternoon.
Ross Battin finished second in the
invitational pace, with Hansard for Ron
Brintnelt and Gary Birmingham of Exeter.
That race was billed as the race against
Multiple Sclerosis.
Dallas Kate, owned by Carl and Grant
Fisher of Goderich, was second in a 2.07.2
utile in the first with John Muir of Seaforth
up.
Countella, co -owned by driver Dale Ken-
nedy and Gordon Dick of Seaforth. finished
second in the 2.08.2 mile at Clinton.
Ross Battin had his second win of the day
with Mitola Hi for Joe Lane of Seaforth. The
five-year-old marc by Scram-Alexcnc Hi by
Seaworthy, has Three wins and three seconds
from 13 starts in 1984, good for earnings of
S1,146 and a 2.07 record,
Valleycreek Tramp picked up his sixth win
from eight starts with John Muir on the bike
for trainer Walter Oster and owner John
Watson of Blyth in the seventh.
Ross Baffin was second in the seventh with
Chipwood Muffin for Gary Birmingham and
Ronald Brintnell of Exeter.

Following the races a chicken barbecue
was held under the grandstand.
The Ontario Sires Stakes for two-year-old
filly pacers will be featured at Clinton
Raceway on Sunday, Sept. 16 with post -time
at 1:30 p.m.
Joellas Knight, owned by Bill Bennett of
Seaforth, finished third in the ninth at Elmira
Raceway. Sept,+3.
Smartie Frances, won her second of the
year in 2.09 for co-owner Randy McLean and
P and S. Lerikos of Exeter, while Jack
Duckworth was second with He's Special for
Carman Kerr of Goderich.
John Muir finished third driving Ja) Bcc
Scamp for Jean and Ben Feagan of Goderich.
Dale Kennedy was,second with Becky Hi
for Joe Lane of Seaforth behind Randy
McLean,
Ross Battin was third with Poplar Lynn for
Les Campbell of Seaforth. With only six
s arters after Nor Lea Strikerin, a two -year -
Strike Out filly owned by Norman and
Leona Amos of Kirkton and Gordon Clark of
London, fell on the backstretch while
warming up before the race began. the fifth
finally got under way, only to have Arnie's
Becky with owner Arnold Campbell of
Seaforth driving, go down just past the
starting line.
THIS ONE DIDN'T GET AWAY—John
Scarrow of Gentre'Slreet, Seaforth, caught
this 25 pound salmon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday
off a Bayfleld pier. The 38 Inch catch was
reeled In on a 10 pound teat line after a 20
minute struggle. It was the largest catch ever

Local bowlers win at Exeter
Claire Reith and Stan Hillen won a prize at
Exeter men's pair lawn bowling competition
last Wed.
At the Seaforth Watch Bowling Tourna-
ment, Kcven Jones of London was first: Fred
and Betty Tilley, second; Manship of
Woodstock. third; Mary and Art Finlayson.
