tenants get rent rebate
on rent increases imposed by Ontario's
Residential Tenancies Act.
Under the Act, rents in most privately -
owned rental accommodation cannot be
increased more than once a year, regardless
of amount. Rent increases cannot exceed six
per cent unless the landlord receives
approval from the Residential Tenancy
Commission.
if there is evidence suggesting an
overcharge, a tenant can apply to the.
Commission to have it determine the lawful
rent, and to have the landlord ordered to
rebate the overcharge," Dr. Elgie said. The
application can be made by the current or
former tenant, he noted, whether or not they
knew of or had agreed to the overcharge.
"Applying for a rent, rebate is not a difficult
or costly step," added Dr. Elgie. "There isn't
any application fee, and the form to be filed
with the Commission is very easy to
complete. In most cases, it can be completed
on the spot in the local Commission office."
Tenants often inquire whether they need a
lawyer, accountant or other professional to
represent them if they are seeking a rebate.
The law doesn't require a tenant to have a
professional representative. and the Com-
mission says that in most cases, tenants are
able to represent themselves.

Anyone who has any interest in Grey
Township, be they residents; former resi-
dents: or those whose ancestors once lived
there; if your roots are there you should have
a copy of the history, "Grey Township and
its People". 1t was written by Marilyn Engel
with material collected by her three student
helpers. it is an excellent source of
information of all aspects of Grey Township
and its people from the earliest days of
pioneer settlers. The amount of detail is
astonishing: factual as possible, toad and
illustrated in a manner that is not only
informative but also interesting. My copy is
appreciated. it is highly recattnmended to

The Canadian Olympic Team will bring
home more medals than ever before. The
superb performance of Alex Baumann in
swimming seemed to irspire others with
pride and determination. it was not only
Anne Ottenhrite. Victor Davis. Mike West
and other swimmers who went on to excel
but our Olympians in other events winning
the gold. silver and bronze. Some of those
were won in events in which Canadians had
never before been entered. Those who were
expected to do well did so. Others exceeded
expectations and were medal winners. There
is a good chance of more medals yet to come.
A true friend is a treasure beyond
measure. 11 is a person who accepts you as
you are. They know your faults, failings and

understand your tailings and recognize your
limitations. You can talk to a friend without
reserve or guarding your words, knowing
that anything important to you will not be
repeated With such a friend you can discuss
personal problems and you can depend on
them if you are lonely or depressed. A
friendship like that is one to be nourished
and cherished. Fortunate are we who share
such a friendship.
