NOTES AND COMMENTS.
The Ontario Government has in
course of preparation a bill which will
embody temperance legislation which
the Legislature will be asked to enact.
After being out only six minutes the
jury in the general sessions Friday night
brought in a verdict of guilty in the case
of W. H. Callaghan, charged with the
theft of $180 from the Crossin Piauo
Company. There was no political evid•
encu, and the jnry were apparently
influenced by the defendant's admissions
in cross-examination.
Some of the campaign arguments now
in use, presumably for lack of better
ones, by the Conservative press, reminds
ins of the "tongue twisters" of our
(youth, such as "Peter Piper picked a
Ipeck of pickled peppers. If Peter Piper
picked a peck of pickled peppers, where's
tithe pock of pickled peppers Peter Piper
`picked?" The argument is just about as
lconvincing, and its merit is the same-
8that if yda say it often and fast enough
ape; get mixed up.—Montreal Witness.
si The Conservatives of West Huron held
ret nom inating oonvention at Auburn
Ayesterday. We have not learned the
name of the nominee, but James Conn-
veeIly, Robt. McLean and Mayor Lewis,
a)uf Goderich have been mentioned.
Whoever the candidate may be he will
Ego down to defeat against Robt. Holmes,
Wof Clinton, the popular member for the
lidding. Mr. Holmes has been an able
ferepresentative for West Heron and the
Slelectora will see that he beads the poll

i.ive Stock Markets.
Toronto, Dec. 15,—There was a good
showing of choice cattle for the Christ-
mas trade at the City Cattle Market to-
day. Business was on the whole good,
and some high prices were paid for fancy
butchers' cattle. There was a heavy
run, but some delay on the railroad west
'of Toronto preventing a large amount of
stock reaching the market until very late
in the day. Up to noon hour 60 cars of
stock had been delivered by the Grand
Trunk Railway, and three more trains
on the road had yet to arrive. The in
complete returns showed offerings am-
onuting to 1,364 head of cattle and 1,355
sheep and lambs.

TH ERE IS
MERIT IN
OUR CLOTHING
Merit that brings a second order
on the strength of the first. What
we do and the way we do it is our
strongest argument. We are try-
ing to increase our business by giv-
ing all we can and taking as little
as possible.
And we'11 Succeed, of coarse. We.
have a fall supply of everything
that pertains to the making of
Suite
And our work costs as
little as any in the country.
