Hammond re-elected
Competition for students between' the
public and Catholic school boards will be the
only benefit of a duo system says the Perth
County board of education's chairman.
David Hammond, 51, of RR 7, St. Marys
was elected in the third ballot at the school
board's inaugural meeting on December 3.
Mr. Hammond represents the townships of
Downie and South Easthope.
Starting his second term as trustee and his
second year as chairman, Mr. Hammond sees
the findings of three provincial commissions
as the main issues to be dealt with in the
coming year. 'These three commissions are
Catholic secondary school funding, the
Shapiro commission on funding private
schools and a commission which evaluates
present funding to school boards.
"These will have a great effect, especially
on small boards," said the chairman adding
the exact effect will be learned as time goes
on.
He said the Perth school board will be
trying to keep the number of students it now
has as the Catholic high school, which the
Huron -Perth Roman Catholic separate school
board has planned opens September 1986.
Mr. Hammond defeated North Easthope
Township trustee Rodney Bell for the position
of chairman. Past chairman Dereck Ward of
Gowanstown and Barbara Herman of M Over-
ton, contenders for the board's top seat, were
written off previous ballots.
The construction company foreman also
repeated statements he made last year about
an open school board
"I will have an open door for trustees.
administration, any student or for anyone
living in Perth Counts.' said Mr Hammond
Stratford trustee Paul Parlee. 35. took the
vier -chairman's spot after the second ballot
He defeated Mrs Herman
Bert Johnson of Lstnwel ran for the
position hut was dropped after the first ballot
The Stratford lawyer has served as
chairman of the separate school funding
committee and on the salary negotiating
committee He sees salary negotiations as a
main issue for the coming year Now, only the
elementary school teachers have yet to settle
on a 1985 1986 contract
Separate school funding and technical
education are Iwo other important areas, says
Mr Parlee He wants the hoard to offer a
"good strong basic program" on computers
Mr Parlee is also concerned about literacy
tests that have been instituted by Canadian
universities. He doesn l ever want Perth
County students 0i lace difficulty at univer-
sity because they haven't received a basic
education.
Education matters
are addressed
Technical and special education as well as
funding to separate school will he addressed
next year by the Huron County hoard of
education
So says the hoard s new chairman Art
Clark of V Ingham. who was acclaimed to
office ai (he December J inaugural meeting
Originally scheduled for Monday December
2. that meeting was cancelled because of a
snowstorm
Mr ('lark. 41. said one of the first things
the new school hoard Will have to address is
the report on technical education presented
by Joe Wooden Clinton's ('entral Huron
secondary school principal presented a report
with a list of recommendations at a special
hoard meeting on November 25
"R needs a great deal of discussion." said
Mr ('lark of the report
The nexw chairman. taking over from
Eugene Fravne of RR 3. Goderich. said
special education at the secondary school
level has to be expanded
The third main subject that will have to be
dealt with in the coming year is the results of
the Shapiro commission This provincial body
made recommendations on the funding of
private schools
"We have a lot of pnvate schools in this
area Christian. Mennonite and Baptist We
can't look at Just Catholic schools." said Mr
Clark
The new chairman lc an engineer for
Maitland Engineering Services of Wingham
He will he assisted by John Jewitt. 46. of
RR 1. lnndeshoro who was acclaimed as
vice chairman
Mr Jewitt said his role will he to assist the
chairman and help make his fellow trustees
