Harmony Hi-Lites reach the top
Reaching the top is tough. As anyone who
has ever strove to be among the best in their
fields well knows, it usually takes years of
hard work to achieve even a modicrum of
success, which all too often comes and goes
fleetingly,
That is why, none of those initially involved
in the formation of the Harmony Hi -Utes
womens barbershop chorus would have
expected the rapid recognition the group has
received, when it was first chartered, only
one year ago May.
The Seaforth-based group, which also
draws members from nearby communities
competed in its first area competition in
Niagara Falls last spring. The Hi -Utes
finished eighth and were chosen as alternates
for the international Convention of Harmony
Inc., held November 8-10, in Ottawa. W hen
one of the top seven choruses had to drop out,
the Hi -Utes suddenly found themselves
faced with the prospect of competing at an
international level.
The group rose to the challenge and,
having worked hard at their craft in the
months between competitions, turned in an
impressive performance. They placed 12th
out of a 23 -chorus field in Ottawa. They also
raised their standing from eighth, to third,
among groups from their own area.
Roughly 1,300 singers were involved in the
quest for the title of International Chorus
Champions, with competitors coming from all
over Eastern Canada and the Northwestern
United States. The Village Vocal Chords, a
group from Chicago, were the eventual
winners in the chorus competition.
The Harmony Hi -Utes came into being in
May, 1984, when founding members Doreen
Strong and Joan Campbell got the ball rolling
with a simple advertisement in the local
paper inviting interested singers to try out.
About 15 people attended the first practice
session at.the Seaforth Public School.
Since then, "It's just grown in leaps and
bounds," said Mrs. Strong, of the group,
