Egg prices
still dropping
The price paid to egg producers for Grade
A large dropped again by one cent in all
provinces except Manitoba.
The Manitoba price will remain at last
month's level to cover higher provincial
costs.
Steadily declining feed prices are respon-
sible for lower egg prices, CEMA explained.
Much of the wheat intended for milling is now
being sold for feed because of the damage
caused by wet weather during the prairie
harvest this fall.
In addition, the United States has reaped a
bumper harvest this year, depressing feed
grain prices in Canada and around the world.
With the one -cent drop, egg prices are now
at a 28 -month low; reported CEMA. However
since egg prices are set using a cost of
production formula under a supply manage-
ment scheme, egg producers are guaranteed
a fair return.
CEMA adjusts egg prices at the beginning
of each month, The producer -run agency
reports any changes in the price to the federal
National Farm Products Marketing Council
prior to its public announcement.
Egg prices paid by consumers are set by
wholesalers and retailers.
