DUBLIN AND AREA
Half of Perth council will not be
returning for another term
Half of Perth County council won't be
returning to the council chambers, some by
choice while others lost their seats in the
November 12 municipal election.
One of the most startling upsets was the
defeat of 1985 Warden Oliver McIntosh. He
was seeking a third term as reeve of Fullarton
Township, losing to his former deputy reeve,
Bert Vorstenbosch of RR 2, Mitchell.
The only other incumbent on Perth County
council to be tossed out of office was Hibbert
Township Reeve Ivan Norris. He was
defeated by the man he beat out in the 1982
municipal election, Roy Swart of RR 4.,
Seaforth.
Two other incumbent reeves faced elec-
tions, but won over their competitors. Calvin
Innes continues to be the reeve of Downie
Township and John lindner is the reeve of
North Easthope despite the opposition.
The only other election affecting Perth
County council was held in Mornington
Township. There, current Reeve Norman,
Haid sought a council position, which he won,.
while Donald Jack defeated Albert Runsted-•
ler for the reeve's chair.
All other reeves are in by, acclamation. •
The new ones are Donald Brubacher of
Ellice Township replacing Fred Knechtel;
John Vander Eyk of Elma Township takes:
over for Glynn Coghlin.
Ted Illman of Lagan Township replaces:
Laverne Gordner, and Len McDonnell was
also acclaimed in the Village of Milverton.
Milverton's former reeve was Maurice
Marleau.
The returning acclaimed reeves are Ron
Denham of Blanshard Township, Amos
Gerber of South Fasthope Township, Hans
Feldmann of Wallace Township, Elsie
Karges of Listowel and Jim Spence of
Mitchell.
Plans are taking shape
Plans for the new Catholic high school in
Perth County are starting to take shape, less
than a year before the school's opening date.
The=Huron-Perth Roman Catholic separate
school board is submitting a detailed plan of
its high school to the planning and
implementation commission which was con-
sidered at the board's October28 meeting. At
the same meeting, it was announced the
school's principal will be in the area for a
week in November.
Daniel Bishop, the man who will be
principal of St. Michael's secondary school in
September of next year, visited area schools
from November 18 to 21. He spent the days
visiting with the students in their schools and
held evening sessions to meet the commun-
ity.
Mr. Bishop officially starts as principal of
the Catholic high school on January 1 of next Northeners visit here
year. He will spend the first six months
preparing for next fall.
On Thursday, the principal will
visit Dublin, St. Columban and Seaforth
Catholic schools with a community meeting in
Dublin in the evening.
Superintendent of education, John Mc-
Cauley
o-Cauley and the current St. Michael's
principal, Larry Cook, have been spending
some time preparing the Grade 8 students for
high school. Along that line, director of
education William Eckert has sent a memo to
all principals, which cuts off access to Grade 8
students in Catholic schools from the public
high schools.
Correction -----
While Mr. Eckert says there will probably
be exceptions in Huron County, where there
won't be a Catholic high school until at least
1988, the traditional "visit to Grade 8
classrooms by guidance counsellors will end:
The director indicated for the past number
of years, information has been given by the
public school board in evening programs: He
suggests the evening programs continue ot
the Catholic students receive the information
during , professional development days at
their school.
And as September 1986 approaches, the
school board is working on plans to adapt St.
Michael's to a high school. Mr. McCauley
says renovations to the Stratford school have
been estimated at $70,000.
There was an error in the November 6
Staffa Women's Institute meeting write-up.
It should have read. Janice Scott, co-ordinat-
or of the Perth County Home Care Program,
was guest speaker and showed a film on
'-come Care.
