Weather perfect for IPM
Brodhagen Correspondent
MRS. BARB SCHERBARTH
345-2298
"What perfect weather we have enjoyed
this past week." For the more than 100,000
that attended the International Plowing
Match at Talbotville, it certainly was
enjoyable to walk around on solid ground
rather than muddy conditions. In fact, it was
really hot in the tents. For many, it was a busy
week with acres and acres Of white beans
being combined. The average, bean crop
seems to be quite good after almost a month
of wet weather. I imagine with the good
weather, by the end of the week there won't
be any beans left in the fields.

six per cent pay increase
Trustees of the Perth County board of
education voted themselves a six per cent
increase over the next three years in a 7 to 5
recorded vote at their September 17
meeting.
It took several motions before the board
agreed on the two per cent a year increase.
Trustees currently receive $463.05 a month
and the chairman receives $694.58.
Stratford trustee Paul Parlee made the
suggestion of a two per cent a year increase
after three other suggestions were voted
down.
The first idea, presented by Milverton
trustee Barbara Herman. was to have a one
shot three per cent increase effective
December 1, 1986.
A second motion by Shakespeare trustee
Rodney Bell recommended there be no
increase at all over the next year. That idea
got turned down flat.
The,school board then turned down the
recommendation made by an ad hoc
committee which called for a three per cent a
year increase. The recommendation ended
up in a 6-6 recorded vote rendering it lost.
Mr. Parlee said the trustees' honoraria
has to at least keep pace with the cost of
inflation.
"We don't want the honoraria to become
m small and insignificant it is simply not
worth the trouble, inconvenience and
sacrifice," said Mr. Parlee adding quickly,
"Not that this 15463 a month) is insignifi-
cant."
Trustees set the stipend for incoming
trustees. The new board formed after the
November 12 municipal election can roll the
figure back but cannot raise it.
Effective this December. trustees will
receive $472.31 a month. A year later that
will increase to $481.76 and by December
1987. trustees will be making $491.40 a
month.
Those trustees voting in favor of the two
per cent increase were Canon Michael
Giffin of Stratford, David Hammond of RR
7, St. Marys, Bert Johnson of Listowel, Ted
Loughrey of Mitchell, Mr. Parlee, Ron
Richards of Stratford and Dereck Ward of
Gowanstown.
Those voting against the two per cent
increase were Mr. Bell, Gerry Foster of RR 2
Atwood, Mrs. Herman, Twyla Reed of Ellice
Township and Howard Shantz of Stratford
Absent for the meeting were Peter Black
of RR 1. St. Marys. Don Crowley of Gadshill,
Earl Oppenhauser of Logan Township and
Barbara Osborne of St. Marys.
