PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

The farmers keep hoping for some
rain and it seems to keep passing us
by. Some fields are really in need of
it and to make sure the corn is knee
high, it really needs a drink. The
soybeans are the perfect size and
tenderness for the pesky groundhogs
to be having a feast. You can notice
driving by fields that have a creek
next to soybeans especially, bare
areas where the groundhogs have
been feeding. They are nibbling
down row after row of the tender
beans. It is an old problem that has
been around for years — how to
discourage the varmints from eating
so many beans, as it affects the yield
of the crop and the farmer's bottom
line.
We are pleased to see Leona
Armstrong home and able to be out
and about some. She is not pushing
it, but sometimes you just have to get
out of the house! We are sorry to
hear that Mary Davidson is in
hospital. We will keep her in our
thoughts.
We are pleased to hear that Lin
Steffler is home from hospital after
spending almost a week. She has
suffered a heart problem but is said
to be doing very well. Behave Lin!
Many folks will know Claire French
and we send get -well wishes to him
as he too has suffered a heart issue.
Triple bypass surgery has taken
place and we hope he is doing well.
We understand that Edna Pletch is
no longer in hospital but is at her
daughter Karen's home. We hope
she is doing better.
We send our hopes for a full
recovery to Steve Fritz as he has
suffered a fall and a back injury. He
was in a London hospital and is
anticipating being released soon. We
hope he has a full recovery.
We congratulate Steve and Julie
Wharton on the arrival of a third
grandchild. Proud parents are Tim
and Cassi and they have a beautiful
daughter they have named Abigail.
Marie Blake is her great-
grandmother and she has lost count
of how many she has, but thinks
around 40 or so. How the family
does grow. Congrats to all!
Michael Craig has been a busy
boy. He was away to Kitchener and
Bingeman's Park to see the Legends
of Rock and Roll last week and then
to London to Budweiser Gardens to
see the Cirque du Soleil performance
on ice of "Crystal". Then it was
home on Saturday for the 45th Craig
family reunion held at Graeme and
Helen Craig's home. They expected
40-50 relatives from Tiverton,
Ottawa, North Bay and Brussels
area. Their relative, Ross Craig of
North Bay, flew over the farm before
landing at Wingham airport and
arriving at the picnic. It was a
busy week for Michael and the
Craigs.
Graeme Craig was busy this past
week as well. Helen had him doing
lots of things to get the place all
tidied up for the weekend reunion. A
little soil was needed, so he headed
off to the other property with the
tractor, where he knew there was
some good soil. A lesson to be
learned is that the water and mud
may be slightly deeper than it looks
and yes, Graeme got stuck. He called
his friend Neil for a bigger Ford
tractor to pull out his little Ford
tractor. Oh what dilemmas Graeme
gets himself into!
The Walton Raceway held an open
practice day on Saturday and
Sunday. The Saturday turnout was
fairly quiet but a few more appeared
to use the track on Sunday.
We send our condolences to the
Van Den Assem family on the
passing of John Van Den Assem. He
will be missed by his wife Joan and
family Dylan, Oscar and Rebecca
and their families. Our sympathies to
all.
A leak was discovered this spring
at the Walton Ball Park and Huron
East arrived to find out why on
Thursday. The line from the hall had
sprung a leak and has now been
repaired. It has been 10 years since
the new well and line was put in so
we should be good for the next 10
years! Thanks to the men of Huron
East Public Works Department.
The Walton Ball Park has three
teams playing at the park this year.
The Walton Brewers men's fastball
team plays the home games on
Tuesday evening, as they have done
for many years. It is a rebuilding
year with some new young players
replacing some of the mature players
