From the Minister's Study
Go back to basics and learn about God
By Pastor Andrew Versteeg

Bible Chapel
Most of us have been challenged
at least once in our lives with the
statement, "go see it for yourself' or
"don't take my word for it, go check
it out yourself." A few days ago we
rearranged our children's bedrooms
in the upstairs of our house. When
we were finished we came
downstairs and told our kids that
their rooms were all different.
They were excited and they had to
go see it for themselves. They
wanted to be sure about what we
were saying.
Recently my wife and I watched
the movie, Case For Christ. Netflix
had it on and there are many places,
such as YouTube, that you can find
the movie. The movie is a true story
about Lee Strobel, an investigative
journalist with the Chicago Tribune
and the Daily Herald. It is well
worth your time to watch it.
Strobel was challenged to
investigate the claims of
Christianity, especially about the
historical accuracy of the Bible and
the historical accounts in the Bible.
His motive was to prove that the
Bible was inaccurate, contradicted
itself and real history, and that those
who believed it were misled and
somewhat separated from reality.
The end of Strobel's investigation
was somewhat different than he
expected. In his own words he said:
"I came to the conclusion ultimately
that based on the avalanche of
evidence that points so powerfully
toward the truth of Christianity, it
would have taken more faith for me
to maintain my atheism than to
become a Christian" (Case for
Christ - Behind the Scenes). Strobel
became a Christian and went on to
write books and take on a still active
teaching ministry on the subject of
the evidences of Christianity.
Many have had the same
experience in trying to debunk the
Bible and Christianity. A good friend
was having some problems in his
life. He decided to go see a
counsellor and he happened upon a
Christian counsellor. He began to
read the Scriptures so that he could
form an argument against the
counsellor and in time he became a
Christian himself.
Not everyone is motived by
antagonism to read the Bible and
investigate the claims of
Christianity. Many more have picked
up the Bible and read it because they
were searching for answers to life,
God and spiritual matters. Some of
us have been encouraged by our
parents or grandparents or friends to
read the Scriptures. We too have
come to faith and life in Jesus Christ
and are Christians today because we
have found the Bible to be true and
its subject matter to be true.
At our church, we have been
teaching through the book of John in
the Bible. This book is actually
written as a letter (a long letter) to
people, many of whom were likely
Jewish, who were skeptical about
Jesus. Near the end of the letter John
states his purpose for including in
his letter the things that he did:
"These have been written so that you
may believe that Jesus is the Christ,
the Son of God; and that believing
you may have life in His name"
(20:31).
God is very clear about why He
gave us His word, the Bible. He
wants us to know Him. He wants us
to know about life as He intended it
to be lived. He wants us to know and
have joy, peace and a foundation of
hope through faith in Him. He wants
us to know how we can have a

relationship with Him through faith
in Jesus Christ. He wants us to know
that Jesus is the Christ, the Saviour
from sin.
I want to encourage you to find
these things out for yourself. There
are no short cuts. We have to read the
Bible for ourselves and in it we will
find the words of life.
Back in the 15th and 16th
centuries, there was a Latin slogan
that was popularized by church
leaders and also leaders of higher
education. The slogan was, "Ad
Fontes" which meant, "to the
sources" or "back to the sources".
There was a resurgence of learning
in many fields of study in those days
and especially in biblical study. The
aim was to translate the Scriptures in
the common language of the people,
to educate the people to read and
encourage the people to read the
Bible. The results were tremendous.
I pray that a spirit of "Ad Fontes"
sweeps across our nation again.
