Blyth Artisan Market approved to open May 31 By Denny Scott The Citizen The Blyth Artisan Market has been approved for operation by North Huron Township Council. The market, a Blyth Business Improvement Area (BIA) initiative, received approval to temporarily operate in the alley west of Memorial Hall until its permanent home behind 437 Dinsley Street becomes available. The market, which will bring in vendors for various items including food and locally -made specialty items, was partially made possible by funds from the Regional Tourism Organization 4's (RTO4) DestinationBLYTH workshop program. While the organization had originally requested a temporary location Dinsley Street between the alley and Queen Street, closing the street, and the expenses associated with it, made the idea untenable. Council, during its May 22 meeting, also waived the licensing fee for the organization and associated vendors. Originally, as outgoing Director of Recreation and Facilities Pat A good weekend The Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary wrapped up its annual penny sale over the weekend. With all the visitors from out of town making Blyth their home for the Barn Dance Campout and Jamboree, the weekend is the perfect time to offer the fun shopping experience. The Blyth United Church Continued on page 6 Convicted and condemned, with the rope around his neck! (Charles Spurgeon) "Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him." Romans 4:7-8 Too many think lightly of sin --and therefore think lightly of the Saviour. He who has stood before his God, convicted and condemned, with the rope around his neck --is the man... to weep for joy when he is pardoned, to hate the evil which has been forgiven him, and to live to the honour of the Redeemer by whose blood he has been cleansed. If Christ has died for me --then I cannot trifle with the sin which killed my best Friend! Look to the cross, and hate your sin --for sin nailed your Well -Beloved to the tree! "A bleeding Saviour I have viewed --and now I hate my sin!" I feel that, if I could live a thousand lives, I would like to live them all for Christ; and I would even then feel that they were all too little a return for His great love to me! A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 Newson explained, staff were under the impression that the market was already exempt. However when reviewing the wording of the licensing bylaw, Newson discovered it may not have been clear. Newson explained that the ambiguity in the licensing bylaw, as far as the BIA is concerned, is unclear. The bylaw is in place to level the playing field between tax- paying businesses in permanent locations and those utilizing portable business models. It also allows North Huron a measure of control over what kind of portable businesses can be operated within the municipality. "Ideally, staff would like to be directed to come back with clarity on the licensing bylaw," she said. While council did approve the request, councillors did have some concerns with the new location. Councillor Brock Vodden suggested that either space, the proposed temporary home in the alleyway or the permanent location behind 437 Queen Street, would be difficult to attract patrons to; however, Newson said that, running during the Blyth Festival season, the music of buskers and accompanying din of the market would ideally draw theatregoers to it. She also said the market's organizers were considering signage to overcome the off -the -beaten -path locations. Councillor Bill Knott asked if North Huron's Emergency Services Director/Fire Chief Marty Bedard had been contacted about closing the alley and any complications that may cause. Newson said he hadn't, but would make sure that communication between North Huron staff, the market's organizers and the fire department did occur. Provided all goes according to plan, the first market of the season will be held on May 31 in the alley just west of Memorial Hall from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The market is set to run the same time every Thursday until Sept. 13 as well as July 8 and 15, Aug. 12 and 19 from noon to 5 p.m. FROM BLYTH Broken Dryer?
