The first long holiday weekend is
in the books as they say and it was
not too bad. Many enjoyed a nice
Friday night and Saturday was a
very nice day until the pouring rain
hit around 9 p.m. that night.
Thankfully, it was a short-lived
downpour, a half-inch in some rain
gauges, and it was amazing how it
dried up so well and quickly on
Sunday.
When the sun was out it was
warm, but when it went in, there was
still a cool breeze. It was a cool night
Sunday night with frost on the
vehicles in the morning. Good things
the crops are not very high. The corn
popped out of the ground on Friday,
about 10 days after it was planted, so
it's fine. Monday was a nice sunny
day, but cool to start, but improved
as the day progressed. I guess we
Muddin'
The Walton Raceway's annual mud bog event was held over the weekend, welcoming folks to
some of the toughest mud around. Whether it was hoping your vehicle could make it through
the deep mud pits or hanging on for dear life while it did, like the young girls above, there were
plenty of fun opportunities to get dirty at the event. (Hannah Dickie photo)

happier. No surprise to many here,
it's people's community involve-
ment, relationships to others and
goals as well as less stress and more
space that achieved the results. So, if
you need to increase your life
satisfaction, perhaps it's time to
think beyond yourself and see about
getting involved and working
alongside others to benefit
community. Just think about what
you enjoy and there is a spot for you.
If it's books, check the library to
help. For flowers, see the
Horticultural Society. If you like
chatting, see the activation folk at
Huronlea. In sports, the soccer, ball
and hockey teams will find you a
role; while if you're interested in
food, Soup and More2 will welcome
your talents. For exercise, take a bag
on your walk and pick up the loose
litter.
Like all volunteer roles, you'll feel
better after doing a good deed for
others and being more involved in
the community. Try it.
I hope you had a good time on the
first summer long weekend be it
Victoria Day or the May 24
weekend.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
In memoriam
As part of the annual Freedom Syrup dedication ceremony, held at the sugar bush where the
syrup is produced on Jeff McGavin's farm near Walton, the names of soldiers passed in recent
conflicts are read out by organizer Bob Rowe's wife, Colleen. This year's ceremony was held
on May 20. (Denny Scott photo)
would say not a bad holiday
weekend compared to a couple of
years ago when it snowed!
The Walton Raceway held its
inaugural event for 2018 with a May
24 mud bog. There was a good
crowd arriving on Friday evening
with a steady flow on Saturday to
camp and enjoy a few runs. There
was a fantastic turnout for Sunday
and lots of mud -covered cars, trucks,
vans, ATVs and people by the end of
the day. Congratulations to Brett Lee
and family and his team for a
successful start to the new raceway
season.
Congratulations to first-time
grandparents Don and Joan Deitner.
Their son Francis and wife Stefanie
have welcomed twin sons to their
lives. Orville and Oscar arrived a
few weeks ago and are very early
and tiny, but are doing very well and
gaining steadily. They will not be
home for awhile yet and we hope
they continue to improve and soon
be home.
Congratulations
to Gord and
Joanne Machan on the birth of a
second granddaughter. Daughter
Julie and husband John Kreiss
welcomed Cassie Joanne to their
family. Big sister Lily is excited
about her new baby sister. Congrats
to all!
Returning from a trip to Redding,
California is Pat Dalton. She
attended the graduation of her great
niece. She went with her sister Gerry
Wein and her daughter-in-law
Charmaine Wein to witness the
ceremony of daughter and sister-in-
law, Theresa Wein. They enjoyed
beautiful weather and scenery.
Redding is in northern California
about three hours northeast of San
Francisco on the north edge of the
Sacramento Valley. Welcome back!
Our belated sympathies to Barb
Watts and the Watts family on the
passing of her daughter-in-law
Christine Watts, wife of David. She
will be missed by all. Our
condolences to the family.
Our belated sympathies are
extended to the Ryan family on the
passing of Bob Ryan of London. He
will be missed by his family and the
many Ryans of the Walton area. Our
condolences to all.
