"I think it helped us to understand so much better what has happened in Syria." "Little Gandhi" is an award-winning look at the role of Syrian peace activist Ghiyath Matar, who became an iconic figure in Syria's freedom movement for giving flowers and water to troops sent to break up non-violent protests in the town of Daraya, in the early days of the uprising. Matar died in the custody of Syrian security forces in 2011. The 2015 film was funded by the Governance and Justice unit of Canada's IDRC as part of a project on transitional justice with the Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies. Global Affairs Canada is also contributing to the film's distribution. IDRC's Roula EI-Rifai, introduced the movie to the crowd. In the front row at the screening sat Zaher Alchbli, his wife Batoul Almussa and their daughter Abeer. The family settled in Goderich earlier this year. During an intermission, Alchbli asked if he could address the crowd. At times overcome by emotion, he described a harrowing journey out of Syria, to Turkey and Lebanon, living in extremely difficult conditions, then the luck of being selected to come to Canada, and two airports later, landing in Goderich. Alchbli spoke of being terrified to come to a place where there are not many Muslims, to a new culture and a place where he and his family knew no one. He said that the community welcome was so overwhelming, that within one month, when he would make the occasional trip to the city, he just couldn't wait to get "back home" to Goderich. At the beginning of the event, Rev. Theresa McDonald -Lee of Welcome Project Syria welcomed participants, noted how nice it was to have the refugee family present and also thanked the International Development Centre (IDRC) for helping to make the event possible. The 2015 film was funded by the Governance and Justice unit of Canada's IDRC as part of a project on transitional justice with the Syrian Center for Political and Strategic Studies. Global Affairs Canada is also contributing to the film's distribution. IDRC's Roula EI-Rifai, introduced the movie to the crowd and was joined after the screening by the film's director, Sam Kadi, who joined a question and answer session by Skype. EI-Rifai said that IDRC, which contributes to developing knowledge that makes a difference in people's lives, funded the movie because it helped preserve the memory of an important event in the history of the Syrian conflict, and allowed a reflection about a missed opportunity and what might have been. EI-Rifai said it was also very important to show the film in a community that now has such a strong connection to Syria and those who fled the violence there. And in a conversation by Skype with Kadi, she thanked him for the film. "Thank you for making sure we don't forget the origins, that this was a cry for dignity, that this was a cry from normal people looking to live in a normal democracy where they have rights. Thank you for allowing us not to forget." and all are welcome, donations while not required, would be graciously accepted. Anyone with questions about this event should email info@bayfieldtrails.com. Time. For 14 days our home was full to overflowing with a number of my favorite people. Many we only see once or twice a year. One wee young lass, our seven month-old British great niece, embarked on her first Christmas tour of Canada charming everyone she met with her huge, not so toothless grin and laughing eyes. It was a wonderful present to visit with her parents, her auntie and her grandparents all under our roof. Our grandchildren's Christmas routine was changed up a bit this year and we got to spend time with them in the days leading Melody Falconer -Pounder up to Santa's arrival. This was a first for us as they usually join the party already in progress. So we had time to decorate gingerbread cookies, play board games and romp in the snow. We also got to join in those memorable childhood rituals of reading a holiday bedtime story, hanging stockings, leaving out the aforementioned gingerbread cookies for the Jolly Old Elf as well as seven, specially selected carrots for the reindeer. And then there was the excitement on Christmas morning of seeing if indeed Santa had visited! Yes, the gift of time provided me with yet another super special present.
