The second annual Town Wide Yard Sale and Village Side Walk Sale is this coming Saturday, June 4. The Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) have been promoting the big day! Last week, Bayfield Breeze invited folks to share their sales with us. Scroll down to our "Pixilated" section to view the compiled listing — print it off and take it with you on your hunt for bargains — you won't want to miss a single, solitary sale. LARGE GARBAGE DAY One of the most oft heard conversations of late in the village has been about "Large Garbage Day Pick Up" - is there or isn't there one happening this year? A note from Municipality of Bluewater's Bayfield Ward Councilor Bill Whetstone: " I have been getting a few emails on this subject so thought I would clarify. The large garbage pick up El cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreeze/week231ssue361/tabid/780/Default.aspx 1/13 6/13/2019 week 23 Issue 361 to business owners, corporate sponsors and individuals that recognized what a special part of the community this the last surviving youth camp in Central Huron could be. The Goderich Lions' Club purchased the property from Girl Guides of Canada on Aug. 1, 2013. Since that day the transformation of the camp began to make it a coed, accessible, year round facility not just for children and youth groups but anyone who enjoys the great outdoors to rent and make use of — family reunions, service clubs, church and school groups, corporate retreats — all are welcome. Due to community support all existing buildings received new roofs, a storage shed was erected, the pavilion area was improved and the camp kitchen renovated and upgraded. Successful fundraising efforts were begun to construct a co-ed, accessible comfort station complete with toilets and showers as well as the supporting septic system. In addition work has begun on creating four bunkhouses that will sleep up to 40 campers when completed. The first two are nearing completion and the foundations are in place for the next two. However, as the dreams are becoming reality, camp supporters are finding that costs, some unforeseen, are growing and more money needs to be raised to complete the comfort station — a handicapped accessible door to one shower and toilet room alone costs over $7,000. Hydro upgrades are needed to support the new buildings. And improvements are needed in the parking lot to allow spots for the influx of campers that will soon be coming. For this reason the Camp Klahanie Board of Directors and the Camp Klahanie Friends will be hosting a Penny Sale and Silent Auction to raise funds to keep the revitalization going. Donations for this event are now being collected. It is planned for June 2 to 4 at Trinity Anglican Church, 10 Keith Cres., Bayfield, ON. June 4 is also Bayfield's Town Wide Yard Sale so members of Bayfield Guiding, great friends of Camp Klahanie, will holding a yard sale on the lawn of the church. A portion of the event proceeds will support the Bayfield Guiding girls' quest to rent a bus for a trip to Toronto. Rumor has it there may be Classic Girl Guide Cookies on site that day too! was originally changed to every other year. However, during last year's budget deliberations it was totally taken out of the budget permanently until further notice." So the answer is no, there will not be a large garbage pick up in 2016. AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY Wonderful weather has greeted visitors to the Outdoor Market in Agricultural Park for the last couple of Sundays. About three vendors have food for sale —fresh rhubarb and asparagus are being sold along with preserves and fresh baking. There are plenty of booths for people to browse. "Bring your dog and walk the Heritage Trail through beautiful downtown Bayfield on behalf of Dog Guides. Your participation and donations will help us raise and train more dogs to be of service to those desperately in need," said Jack Pal, chair, Dog Guide Walk Committee. "Dogs cost upwards of $25,000 each to train and are made available free of charge to those who qualify." The event will start at 9 a.m. in Clan Gregor Square. Registration begins at the gazebo at 8:30 a.m. "After the walk is over you will have an opportunity to meet our guests of honour, Elizabeth Jaremko and Heart, her Hearing Ear Dog," said Pal. Jaremko has lived in London her whole life and has loved dogs just as long. She has been deaf since birth, and therefore attended elementary school at Robarts School for the Deaf in London and E.C. Drury Secondary School for the Deaf in Milton. At age eight, after watching video about dogs and a segment that included dogs that had jobs, she thought that having a Hearing Ear Dog as helper and companion would be the perfect answer to her life challenges. At the end of her time at E.C. Drury, she filled out the extensive application for a Dog Guide and sent it in to the Lions' Foundation. To her immense joy (and her parents' relief) she was accepted and put on the waiting list. After a year and a half, she received news that she had been matched with a dog. Following two weeks of intensive training at the Dog Guides school, which she loved, she brought home her new family member, Heart, who continues to be an immense help and companion to Jaremko. Meet Heart and hear Jaremko tell her story through her mother who will act as interpreter "You will get a true sense of the value of the Dog Guide program. Of course you will also be able to meet Bayfield's own Dog Guide pup in training, Essex and his foster parents Tom and Deb Grasby. Essex has quickly become the love of Bayfield. Although the main message of the day is about supporting Dog Guides, based on the positive feedback last year, the Committee decided once again to add a number of additional dog - related activities for both entertainment and educational value including: • London Police K9 unit St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dogs OSPCA Rescue Dogs Dog agility demonstration by Bonnie Hirst, of Paws Effectiveness Training The musicians will perform a selection ranging from Danny Boy to Strauss Waltzes as well as themes and variations by Mozart — solos, duets, trios and quartets. BAYFIELD FAIR HIGHLIGHTED IN COUNTY CULTURAL PASSPORT The Huron County Cultural Passport is once again ready for local host families and international students. With newly added attractions and events included, the new passport promises to open up the world of local arts, recreational, cultural events and attractions to international students and their host families in Huron County. In 2015, the Huron Arts & Heritage Network (HAHN) in partnership with the Huron Local Immigration Partnership, created the first-ever Huron County Cultural Passport for international students and their host families. Well, this year's edition is hot off the press and ready for distribution. This second updated and expanded edition of the Cultural Passport offers discounts to a wide variety of Huron County fun and exciting arts, culture, heritage and recreational activities including: Alice Munro Festival of the Short Story, Bayfield Fair, Blyth Festival, Exeter Rodeo, Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, Goderich Little Theatre, Huron County Multicultural Festival, Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol, Zurich Bean Festival and Windmill Lake Wake & Eco Park. Host families are eager to show visiting students all there is in the area and beyond. However, the costs of these trips can add up and become a barrier for some host families, who cover most of the cost out of pocket. "The Cultural Passport and the discounts that the participating cultural organizations have offered help make exploration and participation in our local culture a little easier and more affordable for the students and their host families," said Rick Sickinger, Cultural Development officer. "Our hope is that this increased access to our cultural events and attractions will offer these visiting students a better and more rewarding understanding of what we are about in Huron County." Diane Hahn, Homestay Services coordinator with the Avon Maitland District School Board, supports the Cultural Passport, "The passport is a great addition to the choices families make about showing their students some of the wonderful activities we have to offer. We very much welcome the Passport once again. It is a wonderful way for families to enjoy the local attractions and activities that we sometimes take for granted. To see things through the eyes of our international students brings new life and excitement to everyone." Celebrity Cruises are leaders in modern cruising offering a new exciting itinerary for 2017 and featuring all-inclusive packages while Rhumba's selections of outfits will easily fit in a suitcase packed and ready to go! Admission is still free and this year we plan some new activities. Parents (and grandparents) bring your children, children bring your parents! The Canadian National Railway's "School on Wheels" travelled Ontario's northlands delivering education to children in the province's most remote areas. Fred and Cela Sloman of Clinton were the remarkable teachers who were described as having the "missionary spirit" and "self- sacrificing devotion" needed to lead a nomadic existence in a cramped railcar with their five children. The Sloman Railway School Car ran along the 150 mile route between Capreol and Foloyet. The car stayed two to six days at regular stops along the way. As the train whistle blew, the children of railway workers, loggers, trappers and natives came from miles for their lessons. A fire that severely damaged the car nearly condemned it. Miraculously, a former school car student, Bill Stevenson, recognized the school car's number at a CN auction and contacted the Sloman family. A local Board was formed to save the car and bring it to Clinton. The car was purchased and transported by rail to Clinton in 1982. At each of these summer events, tours of the school car will be hosted by our staff, Carolyn Brophy and Donna Hardie. Since the CNR School on Wheels Museum was listed in Ron Brown's book, "Unusual Things to See in Ontario", it has attracted tourists far and wide. It made me chuckle every time I made my list of things I needed to do for the groups I volunteered for. We've been home from vacation for just over two weeks now and I am right back into the thick of my volunteering as things always seem to wind up before they wind down for the summer. Starting tomorrow the Penny Sale and Silent Auction for Camp Klahanie and Bayfield Guiding begins at 3 p.m. And then later on Friday and all morning Saturday we will add a yard sale to the fundraising mix. We have had some fantastic prizes and items donated and I am grateful to all who have called or emailed or simply dropped everything to give me something when I've stopped by with my request letter in hand. You are making a real difference for both the camp revitalization and the Bayfield Guiding girls. It is ambitious to take a group of girls on an overnight field trip to the big city. Busing alone will cost us about $1,600. But I am determined to give our girls some of the same experiences that girls that live in the city can have. I am also very thankful to all those who will join me in making these events a success this weekend. I do not volunteer alone. In fact I am so glad to live in a community of like-minded souls as evidenced by my latest "To Do List" notepad that says, "Those who can do. Those who can do more volunteer". - Mclody Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome. Deadlines for submissions are Sundays at 4 p.m. Please email me at bayfield.breeze@villageofbayfield.com or call 519-525-3830. _BAWIELD BREEZE - the ,loge, ov".1 =,r,bne nL"ei'S loun:e U SHARE 910L] SICK Lip raF2 BAYFIELD BREEZE tXv {LICK HERE Founding Members _.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................
