Starting in 2008 the BRVTA has been working to revitalize these two trails. The Grand Opening was held on ]an. 7, 2012. Since the trails were reopened the BRVTA has worked to make the Taylor Trail a mobility trail accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. (Photos by Melody Falconer -Pounder) A great outdoor family activity is snowshoeing so it is only logical that the Bayfield River Valley Trail Association (BRVTA) would host an opportunity for families to hike or snowshoe on the Varna Nature Trails for Family Day Sunday (Feb. 15). Starting at 1 p.m., Tyler Hessel, of Outdside Projects in Bayfield, will give a quick "lesson" on the trail on snowshoeing. He will also bring rental snowshoes to make it convenient for those who wish to give it a try and don't own snowshoes. Participants are also welcome to bring their own snowshoes. The hike will take approximately one hour and the terrain is suitable for all ages and abilities. The trails start at the Stanley Recreation Complex, 1.6 km west of the village of Varna on County Rd. # 3. Parking is available. To learn more about this Feb. 15 event contact a hike leader, Jane Davidson at 519 565-2653. Naftel's Creek Conservation Area will be the location of the next BRVTA sponsored hike on Feb. 26. This hike will also begin at 1 p.m. Both beginning and experienced cross-country ski enthusiasts are encouraged to join in a lovely ski through the bush. Naftel's Creek, which is a Level 2/moderate trail, is popular for cross-country skiing in the winter months. Those who take part will cover just over 3 KM, this should take about an hour. Naftel's Creek is located at 79152 Highway 21, south of Goderich. Parking is available. To learn more contact Chris Bowers, one of the hike leaders, at 519 565-4605. The BRVTA has several trained hiking leaders, eager to get out on the trails. Hikes will be of varying degrees of length and difficulty. The BRVTA's new schedule for the year will soon be on their website, bayfieldtrails.com and Facebook. Some of the hikes will have an educational component to help acquaint people with area history and the natural environment. For maps of trails, refer to Ontario's West Coast Hiking Guide at ontarioswestcoast.ca. Anyone who has questions or would like to make suggestions can call one of the hike leaders or contact Program Coordinator, Helen Varekamp at 519 565-5442. According to Varekamp, who is also membership coordinator for the BRVTA, , 2014 was a very exciting year for the association, and the executive would like to thank the community for their continued support. This community project will continue to grow, thanks to memberships, donations, and volunteers. "We were very fortunate to have a dozen volunteers take training in the spring to become Certified Hike Leaders. We have had numerous guided hikes ever since, covering a wide variety of topics, ages and trails. Details are available on our new website bayfieldtrails.com," wrote Varekamp in a recent letter to BRVTA members. "We have appointed a web manager to improve and update our website and you will see some great new features. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter, keeping the community up-to-date on events and issues." Varekamp also reported that a new trail maintenance manager has joined the BRVTA team and a start has already been made to improve some of the trail structures. "We know you will want to continue to be part of this great trail network. Financial support is needed in order to cover maintenance and insurance costs. (GLR Photo) The evenings' second half started with two firsts for the town hall: Celine Dion (Berny Hill) and dry ice. (GLR Photo) PHOTOS BY GARY AND KATE LLOYD-REES AND STORY BY GARY LLOYD-REES On Feb. 6 and 7, sold -out audiences were treated to a Canadian star-studded night to remember, when the Bayfield Town Hall and a number of local Bayfield residents were transformed for a "two -off' cabaret performance in celebration of Canadian music from the 1960s to the present day..."The Great White North Cabaret... Eh?" The evening was produced and directed for the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society (BTHSS) by Paul Hill assisted by Lisa Stewart, and Dwight and Janice Nelson as Co -Directors. Behind the scenes, Blair Langley was the Stage Manager, Graham Wallace the Technical Director, with Helen Varekamp and Bronwyn Bechard looking after Costumes and Arlene Parker, Jane MacLaren, and Berny Hill looking after Decorating and Sets. "The Great White North Cabaret... Eh?" was the fourth Bayfield Town Hall cabaret, following the 1940s themed "We'll Meet Again", "Sixties doing the 60s" and last year's "Those Were the Days". All three earlier events were directed by Judy Keightley and born from her idea to provide some entertainment for the die-hards in Bayfield who are not "snowbirds" and who therefore valiantly brave the Canadian winter. Due to popular demand, two performances were held for the first time this year -both of which were sold out attracting attendees from near and far. The evenings' performances were "hosted" by Bob and Doug McKenzie (Paul Hill and Dwight Nelson) whose diverse topics ranged from Grade 4 Geography to local politics. References to "Mayor Tiller Hensall" had the audience in stitches. The Barenaked Ladies (Doug Brown, Jim Fergusson, Gary Lloyd -Rees and Ian Rutherford) got the first half of the evenings' performances underway (sorry Bob - there weren't actually any bare naked ladies). They were followed by a number of familiar names and familiar faces: Ian and Sylvia Tyson (Dwight and Janice Nelson); Heart (Brown, Helen Latimer, Lloyd -Rees, Rutherford and Jamie Thomas); Anne Murray (Lisa Stewart with her dancing partner Greg Stewart); The Stampeders (Brown, Lloyd -Rees and Rutherford); Gordon Lightfoot (Fergusson); The cc.villageofbayfield.com/Members/BayfieldBreeze/Week07lssue293/tabid/710/Default.aspx 6/12 6/13/2019 Week 07 Issue 293 The Good Lovelies were Leanne Kavanagh, Danielle DeMers, and Natalie Tarnawski. As a finale, Bob and Doug were joined on stage by the full cast for a rousing rendition of "Take Off'. Kate Lloyd -Rees, past -president of the BTHHS said, "Once again we want to thank the enthusiastic cast members, the many helpers behind the scenes, and Paul for taking on the Director's role this year and for his leadership and direction. Of course, without the audience there would be no event — thank you to all who attended for your wholehearted support of this event and of the BTHHS." Paul Hill said, "As a first time producer/director this year, I was amazed at the enthusiasm that the cast and crew had for the theme, the show and their unending commitment to rehearsal, setup and the creative process. This has turned into a night of simple, amateur fun - I call it air band on steroids. The cast was busy this year with everyone playing multiple roles. I am truly inspired by them all and thank them for their ability to step up and make it all happen. See you next year." When sorting through the things that tell my life story these past few months in anticipation of our big move I discovered I have always been one to cut and paste things into books. I started at a fairly young age and they demonstrate a time line of my interests. These were: Greg Evigan (BJ and the Bear), Miss Universe Karen Baldwin, Happy Days, Scott Baio, Michael Jackson and Princess Diana. Yes, I did part with a couple of these creations when sorting but I'm not telling which ones. In later years my books have gotten more personal. I have chronicled Bayfield Guiding years and family vacations. The way the Melody Falconer -Pounder memories have been captured has evolved too, from simple books to hardcore scrapbooks with fancy letters and patterned paper to my current favorite version, digital creations then printed in book form. These newer sleeker scrapbooks are wonderful — they take up very little room on the shelf and allow you to pack a lot of pictures as well as journaling into them. The quality is rather amazing too and you can make copies for anyone who would like one! Right now I am working on the Bayfield Guiding year from 2013-14 and then it will be time to turn my attention to the family yearbook for 2014. Hope there is enough weeks left in this winter for me to get it all done. Yep, that is how much I enjoy it! — Melody Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
