Santa was afforded rock star treatment when people of all ages lined up on either side of the walkway leading to the gazebo for an opportunity to greet the jolly old elf. In Clan Gregor Square on the evening of Nov. 9 the air was crisp and clear with not a hint of wind making for a very pleasant time for those people who gathered in the park for the tree lighting. While the crowd waited for the lights to turn on they indulged in hotdogs and hot drinks sold by the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society in support of the Bayfield Town Hall. Some children could also be seen running and tossing about "shooting stars" a fun addition to the evening that was also a fundraiser for the Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC), the group that organizes the annual Christmas in Bayfield weekend. Mary Brown, of the BACC, along with 17 members of the Huron Centennial School Band, led a very enthusiastic countdown to the switching on of the lights. Once the lights were shining it was time for Santa Claus to make his grand entrance off a Bayfield Fire Truck. Santa was afforded rock star treatment when people of all ages lined up on either side of the walkway leading to the gazebo for an opportunity to greet the jolly old elf. Even more youngsters waiting for their special moment on his knee when he reached his special chair greeted him at the gazebo. After time with Santa many families drifted off toward Main Street to check out the shops and restaurants on Main Street that were open late to mark the start of the holiday season. Mary Brown welcomed everyone to the tree lighting on behalf of the Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce. Jackie Rowe, of the Garlic Box in Hensall, will be the guest speaker at the Bayfield Garden Club Annual General Meeting and Fall Potluck on Nov. 17. LETTERS TO SANTA Bayfield residents will be pleased to know that Santa Claus will once again be receiving mail in his special mailbox. The box is at a new location this year - the entrance to Bayfield Foodland. Santa's elves delight in hearing from area youngsters and learning what is on their wish lists every year. Be sure to include a return address so that the children can be sure of a note in return from the jolly old elf himself. Seventeen members of the Huron Centennial School Band, under the direction of Mr. Castle, performed for the crowd and assisted with the lighting of the lights official countdown. The event was held in the meeting room at the Bayfield Library. (Photo by Dennis Pal) Members of the Bayfield Agricultural Society (BAS) discovered that the rain didn't deter people from coming out to Christmas in Bayfield events. About 100 children arrived at the Bayfield Library to decorate gingerbread cookies with BAS volunteers. Susan Lehnen and Anna Dalton -Needles went through all their prepared cookies in short order. They were pleased that they had a great deal of help. From a youngster's perspective, it was amazing how much candy can be added to a cookie until it was just perfect. As soon as the young people were finished their cookies they were encouraged to go to Clan Gregor Square to have a pony ride. Even though it rained many did go to see the ponies. Liz Elliott and her helpers, all seasonally dressed, made it a wonderful time as the kids mingled with all the ponies. Over the weekend, Afra Van Wonderen and Don Brodie were just two of the Bayfield Agricultural Society's volunteers that assisted visitors to the parking lot at St. Andrew's United Church with their holiday wreath shopping needs. The sale of wreaths and tails is an annual fundraiser for the society that organizes the Bayfield Community Fair each August. (Submitted photo) Across the street in front of St. Andrew's United Church, several members of the BAS were selling the popular evergreen wreaths. All wreaths are made from local evergreen boughs, usually cedar, white pine, spruce, juniper, and yew. They are dressed with a bow and are ready for hanging. Anna Dalton -Needles also offered a service to decorate the wreaths for any customers in the colors preferred for $25. If anyone missed getting a Christmas wreath, a call to 519 263-2404 or a message left at 519 482-3020 should satisfy their needs. EXETER QUILT SHOW On April 16-18, 2015 the Exeter Quilt Show will be held at Trivitt Church. The committee is now seeking the help of the surrounding communities to collect quilts made before 1960. Organizers note that the older the quilts are the better and condition is not critical. They realize that heritage quilts are not usually in mint condition. They have been used and loved. If the quilts have a story to accompany them, that is even better. Vintage hats will be displayed throughout the venue and they plan to have a few mirrors for those who want to try on a few for pictures. The committee is hoping to have 85-90 quilts for the display. I basked in the sunshine and enjoyed feeling the warm breeze brush against my skin. It was a gift from Mother Nature before she turns her back on us and Old Man Winter descends. Don't look now but there is snow in the forecast almost every day for the next two weeks. Still even a few flakes would be better than the cold drizzle and brisk winds that we were faced with this past Saturday when the village was trying to host a Santa Claus Parade. Melody Falconer -Pounder Once again Bayfield Guiding and the Bayfield Optimist Club had planned to team up to have a float in the parade. Unfortunately, that aforementioned cold drizzle and brisk wind made it impossible to pull it off safely and comfortably. My heart went out to the Optimist members, their planning and preparing became something of a soggy mess in short order. As luck would have it I had one of my better turnouts of young ladies to ride on the float — always prepared they came armed with umbrellas. What to do with nine enthusiastic float riders and suddenly no float? Well, after a little brainstorming it was decided that Brown Owl's Santa Fe would act as a float — so after a few hurried moments of decorating we lined up and headed along Main Street — Sparks, Brownies and Guides hanging out the windows and filling up the hatchback waving furiously and shouting "Merry Christmas" to one and all. As I drove along the route waving to familiar faces I realized we had it good. We were out of the wind, fairly dry, and I even had the benefit of a heated seat, while the spectators stood in the drizzle and the cold. I would like to thank everyone who came out to watch the parade — you put the "can" do spirit in Canadian! My ladies declared that my five -door vehicle was the best float ever. They suggested we use it again next year and quite possibly we will — with a little planning I think we could create a pretty sweet "elf -mobile" for all to enjoy! — Melody P.S. Extra special thanks to Gary Lloyd -Rees, Dianne Brandon and Dennis Pal for photographing the parade for me so that I could spend it with the girls in Guiding. Gary is responsible for the lovely picture of me above - it captures the essence of our morning perfectly! Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
