It was one of 10 trees planted on the town hall grounds recently. (Photos by Barry Detenbeck) The grounds of the Bayfield Town Hall were greatly enhanced last week by the addition of 10 mature trees planted due to the generosity and foresight of 10 Bayfield residents. "This will transform the town hall property for generations to come, and we cannot thank local residents enough for their support" said Kate Lloyd -Rees, president of the Bayfield Town Hall Heritage Society (BTHHS). A mixture of Sugar Maples, Red Oak and Spruce were moved by tree spade due to the size of the trees. "These are all native species that will create a lot of shade cover and visual appeal as they mature," said Jerry Selk, a volunteer with BTHHS. "I would also like to thank members of the Huron Master Gardeners who volunteered their expertise to select the trees and lay out the planting." The trees were supplied by Gold Coast Landscaping, who are currently building a new garden center just south of the village. "Be sure to come out for an entertaining evening with beneficial information to consider while we plan our gardening seasons." The evening will be held on Apr. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bayfield Lions' Community Building. The BGC program continues through to November with opportunities to listen to speakers, learn from other members, socialize at garden parties and potlucks as well as a trip in early summer. ., ., \ ,Im I_ Y The Bayfield and Area Chamber of Commerce's Sail and Canvas Festival will celebrate its 11th anniversary on the weekend of June 15-16. The Sail and Canvas Committee is looking for exciting, fresh talent to showcase their work. Artists, artisans and digital artists who would like to participate should email a short bio and website address to milligan@cabletv.on.ca. If potential participants do not have a website they should email seven to 10 jpeg images of their work instead. Please put Sail and Canvas Committee/ Artist Participation in the subject line. The deadline to apply is Apr. 25. A committee will determine an artist's acceptance in the festival. Artists not affiliated with a Bayfield art gallery must pay a $50 registration fee. This fee confirms their participation in the festival, helps advertise the weekend, ensures artists have a volunteer to watch over their set-up during breaks, an artist reception and coffee from the Bayfield cafes. The fee is non-refundable. Artists are responsible for their own set-up. This involves a tent or umbrella structure, a way to hang work, a table, a chair and working materials. (Photo by Dianne Brandon) STORY BY MELODY FALCONER -POUNDER It may have begun as a drop of water in a pond but the ripple it has caused is one of tremendous support and enthusiasm by the community at large. Yes, the Optimist Club of Bayfield's proposal to create a Splash Pad in Clan Gregor Square grows ever closer to reality "Anyone who has been thinking about donating to the cause, now is the time to do so," said Mike Dixon, chair of the Bayfield Optimist Splash Pad Committee. To date about 65 per cent of the funds necessary to complete the project have been raised since the "Making A Splash" Campaign began in the fall. The project has not been without its setbacks and difficulty in earning acceptance for a potential grant had the club rethinking their Opening Day for the pad of June 30 to Aug. 3 However, once again community minded individuals stepped forward to assist in helping the project stay on schedule. The Baker Family Foundation has agreed to match all donations received for the campaign during the month of April and up to May 15th to a total of $37,500 "Their wish is that we can have the pad open for Canada Day as previously planned," said Dixon. The Municipality of Bluewater put out a request for tenders on the pad's construction some weeks ago and should be announcing what company received the contract in the next couple of weeks. Spurred on by the fact that for every dollar collected they can bring in two, club members and "Friends of Optimists" will be continuing their door-to-door canvassing until the end of April. order form online through the club's dedicated website: www. bayfieldsplashpad. com. A PDF of the same form being distributed door-to-door is available on the site, just fill it out, print it off and mail it in. Can't wait for a person to come to the door? Forms are also available at Brandon's Hardware. Brick walkways similar in design to the existing Bayfield Town Hall and the Clan Gregor Square walkways will be installed around the Splash Pad giving the project a timeless and cohesive look. In addition to the door-to-door canvas the club has got two more irons in the fire with funds going to the "Making A Splash" Campaign. The Rubber Duck Race is scheduled for May 19 at 1 p.m. at the South Pier of the Bayfield Harbor. Tickets are now available from club members and are selling for $5 each or five chances for $20. Only 750 ducks will be "sold" and to date over 125 have already been claimed — so don't wait to the last minute to purchase. The club's annual Golf Tournament, sponsored by Nahuel Painting, is set for June 1 with a tee off time of 11 a.m. This fun day on the links will be held at the Bluewater Golf Course and will be followed by a pig roast. Tickets are $65 and are available now by calling Jay Fisher at 519 482- 5557. Others in the community have created their own initiatives to support the cause as well. Members of the club and "Friends of Optimists" worked diligently through last summer to get all the necessary approvals in place to proceed with the project. From the beginning the club has looked at it as a project for the whole community to rally behind. Several organizations and groups in the village wrote letters of support. Plus the backing of the Bluewater Heritage Committee was also an integral part of the approval process as Clan Gregor is located in a Heritage Designated District. "The Splash Pad will benefit the children who reside in the village and greater municipality as well as all the children that visit the community with their families each year," concluded Dixon. I learned a long time ago that if you don't anticipate something than you can't really be all that disappointed if things don't go to plan. But I can certainly applaud the process when something really starts coming together and that would appear to be the Splash Pad project for Clan Gregor Square. It is absolutely awesome to see so many people and businesses in the community coming together to support this initiative and now to learn that The Baker Family Foundation is doubling the monies donated from Apr. 1 to May 15. One day while out canvassing I actually pulled into an abandoned driveway and had a good cry. See I'm a shy person at heart. Back in high school I forced myself to do things outside my comfort zone to try and break out of my shell. I, along with an equally shy girl, sold advertising for our yearbook. We stood outside the businesses on The Square and debated about who was going to do the talking next. You know the conversation, "It's your turn. I talked at the last place." It was a painstaking process but I did it. So in the next few days if I happen to knock on your door with donation information about the Making A Splash Campaign, please be gentle with me — cause right now five will get you 10 — and that is something I too can rally behind, shy or not. - Ideas and contributions to the Bayfield Breeze are always welcome.
