Canada's Liquor Expenditure.
The following figures in reference to
Canada's consumption of intoxicants
are taken from the Government blue
bootie, and cover the year ending
March Slut, 1011; --
Gallons,
Canadian Spir-ite,,,.,!,»,.,, 4,i46,452
Imported Spirits. , .... ! , . , , 2,591.050
Canadian Malt L'quore, ..„41,750,803
,41,750,$63
Ingported Fait Liquors 1,103,155
Imported Wires, , , . , , , , ! . , , 833,339
Total . Y.,,..., •....,.50,515,665
In addition to this there is a quanti-
ty of native wine and eider used,
which is not subject to excise duty,
but it roust have loss than 2i per cent.
of alcohol, and on the whole the
quantity is not large. The Pioneer
estimates the value of the various
items at the following rate per gal-
lon ; Canadian spirits, $0 imported
spirits, $8 ; Canadian malt liquors,
70c : imported malt liquors, $2 00;
imported wines, $5, This gives the
following figures :—
Canadian Spirits .. , , , ... $24,873'712 00
Imported Spirits .... , . , , 20,735,018 00
Canadian' Malt Tiquore.. 20,225,604 10
Imported. Malt Liquors,-. 2,386,810 00
Imported Wines ... ,, . , . 4,160,095 00
Total........., .. $81,392,969 10
This gives us an average eonsum;i-
tion per head of nearly nine tenths of
a gallon of spirits ; nearly 5i gaIlons cf
beer and one-tenth of a gallon of
wine ; while the actual expenditure
per bead for intoxicants was $11,30
Compared with other countries our
expenditure for strong drink is com-
paratively small, but it is still an
enormous drain upon the country.
This fact appears when we consider
that the total estimated wages and
earnings for all Canadian industries
for 1910.11 only amounted to $544,408,-
234, which means that the liquor trade
absorbs directly about 15 per cent. of
the total earnings in all Canadian
industries, while the indirect drain
must also be very great. During the
same period it is estimated that our
Canadian churches cost us about
$15,000,000, so. that we spent over $5
on liquor for every dollar we spent
upon the Church. Canada is a rich
country, but she cannot afford to
spend over $80,000,000 a year upon
strong drink,

Heavy Winter Losses Predicted Where
Bees Are Not Ped..
Buckwheat honey seems to be a
very scarce article this fz.11. Dealers
in this product who usually buy and
sell from fifty thousand to one hun.
dred thousand pounds every year are
having greater difficulty than usual in
getting their winter's supply. As
bees in a great many parts of Ontario
depend on fall honey for their winter's
stores, this would indicate that they
will also be running short before
spring unless the beekeepers are care-
ful to see that they are supplied with
artificial stores, The Provincial Api-
arist, Mr. Morley Pettit, gives the fol-
lowing directions for making feed for
wintering bees.
Place twenty pounds of water in a
boiler on the stove and bring to a boil,
then stir in fifty pounds of best granu-
lated sugar, stirring thoroughly until
fully dissolved ; bring the syrup near-
ly to a boil again and stir in three
teaspoonfuls of tartaric acid previous-
ly dissolved in half a cup of water,
This makes a good thick syrup, which
will make the very best of winter
stores for bees.
A good colony .of beeswill require
thirty or more lbs. of this syrup un-
less they are well supplied with honey.
At this late date the only feeder to
use for out -door wintered bees is the.
baif gallon fruit jars. Fill the jar,
draw over the top a piece of cheese-
cloth, then screw down the ring hold-
ing the cheesecloth tight, The jar
of syrup is now placed upside down,
on the frames of the brood chamber
so arranged that the bees can come
up between the frames and suck the
syrup through the cheesecloth. Air
pressure will prevent the syrup run-
ning out any faster than it is taken by
the bees. Five or six of these jars
can be placed on one hive at once and
warm packing placed around them
to prevent the escape of heat from the
colony. In a few days the bees will
have taken the syrup all down and
stored it in the combs when the jars
can be taken off and the packing fixed
down on the hives for winter,
The Ontario Agricultural College,
Guelph, is offering a free course of
lectures on beekeeping lasting two
weeks during January. Persons in-
terested in taking this course should
write to the President of that Insti-
tution, asking for a copy of the pro,
gramme.
