N PURITY
PURITY FLOUR is milled
exclusively from the best West-
ern hard wheat -the world's
finest. More than that, PURITY
FLOUR consits entirely of the
huh -grade portions of the wheat.
The low - grade portions are
separated and excluded during
the PURITYproceQs of milling.
Such high-class flour, of course,
expands more in the baking.
It makes "more bread and
better bread."
It makes lighter, flakier pastry, too, if you just talk the pre-
caution to mid ]Fiore shortening. On account of its unusual
strength PURITY FLOUR, for best results, requires more
shortening than ordinary flour.
Progressive dealers, everywhere, sell marry FLOUII,
and take pride in recommending it.

MAKS YOUR OWN SEED TISTER
Two Pie Plates Intelligently Used May
Improve Next Season's Crops.
Good seed is important to large
yields of crops. It clods not pay to
chi efully prepare land for a crop and
then sow seed that lacks in vitality
and a large percentage of which will
not grow. The principal seeds which
should be tested before using are clo-
ver, alfalfa and corn. It is a simple
matter to do this and one that should
be attended to before spring's work
begins.
The accompanying illustration shows
a hotnennde seed tester which can
be innde of two pie tins or two orc1I-
nary table plates and two pieces of
muslin. If alfalfa seed is to be tested
CHEAP, BUT EFFECTIVE SEED TESTER,
take 100 seeds from different portions
of the seed package and place them on
a moist cloth on a plate, then cover
them with a moist cloth and another
plate. The plates should be kept in a
reasonably warm room, and each day
open the plates and lift the cover
cloth. In a few days all the good seeds
will be sprouted. By counting the un -
sprouted seeds and noting the charac-
ter of the sprouts of all the seeds n
person will know the percentage of
germinable seed and the vitality of
the seed.
In testing corn faster work can 1)e
done with a larger tester and divided
into small squares. each large enough
to hold three kernels of seed. Each
square should he numbered so it can
be easily designated from which ear
the kernels are taken. The principles
of the larger tester are the same ns
the one herewith illustrated. When
corn is tested it is customary to take
three kernels from' an ear, one from
tip, one from the center and the other
from the butt. Ears showing a low
germination test and weal: in vitality
should be discarded. --Hoard's Dairy-
man.
Sudden Death.
The Stratford Herald reports that
Mr. John Torrance, who is one of the
oldest orga-.niz:,rs of the Foresters, ar-
rived in that city on Monday after-
noon from Listowel, apparently in the
best of spirits and health. Iii the
evening he had delivered one address
and was rising to add a few further
remarks when be staggered and sank
to the floor. On picking him up, his
fellow Foresters were shocked to find
him unconscious, and immediately
summoned medical aid. Dr. Ruther-
ford found. that Mr. Torrance had been
seized with a paralytic stroke, and he
had him removed to the general hos-
pital, in a very critical condition.
The Cattle Supply.
The report of live stock conditions
in Ontario, corroborates all that has
been saki during the past few months
as to the scarcity of beef cattle. The
effect,, of this scarcity will he felt
more; keenly later on than to -day. A
bp' f aniaril cannot be grown to
'errturity in a day. It takes a couple
if years to do this and in the mean-
time the supply of beef is bound to be
scarce and dear. The scarcity to -day
is not so much in marketable beef
cattle as in young stock for future
use, though the supply of choice beef
has been below the demand for this
quality all winter. The cattle supply
is still serious enough and a drop in
the price of beef is not yet in sight.
What Is Horse Power.
In connection with the steamship
propulsion the average man is apt to
speak very glibly of so many hundred
of horse power. But it is extremely
doubtful if one person in a hundred
really has a due appreciation of what
the phrase actually means. On this
point some very interesting remarks
are made by a Glasgow engineer -sur-
veyor, He said that by calculating the
strength of 12 men to be equal to one
horse power it would require 480,080
men to produce as much energy as the
70,000 horse -power developed by the
turbine machinery of the express Cun-
arder Lusitanin. Then if the men
were to work on the eight-hour day
system these figures would give a
total of 1,510,000, that being the
number of men whose strength would
he necessary to drive the vessel across
the Atlantic, So it would take all the
men in Scotland to supply the energy
product all the day round by the
wonderful turbine machinery of this
great ship.

paradoxical, but is true.
A rustic hanging basket in her mis-

aspiring bantam one day last week.
She flew up, and the impetus she gave
the basket set it swinging like a pen-

Since then she has taken a flight

Orchard and Garden.
Scatter wood ashes through the or-
chard, especially on the sandy parts.
If you are not using any system of
cover crops keep the orchard well cul-
tivated for two reasons, to keep down
weeds and to conserve the soil mois-
ture.
Rough, stormy weather should he
utilized in preparing the frames and
in replacing broken glass in the hot-
bed and cold frame sash. It is desir-
able to paint sash at least every other
year.
If the orchard is an old one with
trees headed high let the chickens t'un
in it and disk frequently, at least twice
in three weeks. This will not only

Good Cows Pay Well,
A person purchasing an implement
considers first how much service he
can get out of it and not its value as
scrap iron when worn out. Those who
purchase a dairy cow should consider
how much butter fat she will produce
and not the value of her hide and
carcass. Those who purchase a few
cows when the price of fat is high and
sell them off when the price goes down
naturally have a poor opinion of the
dairy business. To obtain the best
results it is essential that the ani-
mals purchased for the dairy should
be of the strict dairy type and be
made a permanent part of the farm
live stock. Those who purchase cows
with the intention of milking them
buta short time and then selling there
off when the price of butter fat drops
or when the animal goes dry, natural-
ly look more for beef producers rather
than milk producers. It is impossible
to build up a good dairy herd by this
method. Dual purpose animals may
be used in some localities to good
advantage but to get the best results

one of the special dairy breeds should
be used. This does not mean that
only pure bred animals should be used
but animals that are bred for milk
production. A good dairy cow should
produce enough butter fat in her beat
days that the value of the beef may be
of secondary importance if not entire-
ly ignored.
