Mr. Hartley, Principal of the Public School, had 28 pupils writing, of whom 20 passed ; the total number of those who wrote here was 55, which included a number from outside schools, and of these 16 passed, a very good per centage. Orr Saturday morning hast Conduc- tor Ross had charge of the passenger train going into Goderich. The signi- ficance of this lies in the fact that when the road was first bulli, Mr. Ross helped to spread the ballast on it and had never been over the road since., Under conditions that were ideal the Sunday School excursion to Gode- rich on Thursday last was a great success. There were nearly 500 peo- ple on the special train, Seaforth con- tributing the greater number, while Clinton, Mitchell, Stratford and other stations also sent good sized crowds. r r + How To Remove Waris. lt,'s really a simple matter to remove warts and callouses if you apply Put- nam's Corn and Wart Extractor. Mr. Wm. Kelly, sr., of the 2nd line, Culross, has returned from Alllerta, where he has just completed home- steadingduties on a farm in the fall wheat belt south of Calgary. Mr. Kelly is greatly pleased with South Alberta as a farming country. The rain and wind storm of Monday afternoon, July 13th, was one of the most violent that every passed over this section of country. After the fashion of tropical cyclones it came on with great suddenness and for a few minutes the wind bad terifTic force. Damage in the town was confined to fruit and shade trees, a large number of which were broken down. Hail accompanied the rain which came down in torrents. Much surprise was caused through- out town when on Saturday morning, July 11th, it was announced that Mr. Archibald dillies was dead. Though he was seldom seen about town dur- ing the past year, he was known to be enjoying good physical health: In fact he was quite as well as usual until a few minutes before his death, which occurred about 6 o'clock a. m , when he suffered a violent pain in the back. While efforts... were being made to alleviate this he suddenly expired. Delicate Children. Ml Persons Who Have Delicate 'ChB. dren Chir- dren in Wingliam Will Be interested in Titis Article. She may work moderately, slowly and better if no more than four or five hours a day. When elle works she shculd be well fcd. That does not mean that she should be then or at any other time overfed. And she should be fed some. thing that will make milk in her ud, dere as well es repair waste in her own body. Oats aro auitable as a grain ration, and wheat bran makes a good addition. Let the farm mare work easily, gently, moderately, if you great ly need her services, but do not let her ever become very warm or hot. Shall the colt follow its mother as she walks In the plow or cultivator? No; emphatically no. Leave the colt with its fellows In the cool and shaded orchard, in the quiet box stall, says a writer in Breeder's Gazette, Chleago, • A wZLL nnnn voAL. Take the mare to it at least once In the middle of the half day and let it suck while she rests. Do not hurry her back to her task either. Very soon both mother and foal will become re- signed to this system of living, and neither will fret much. The colt will be nibbling the grass, even munching oats, instead of wearily plodding the. endless corn rows with its mother un - tier a too ardent sun. Is it best that the mare should work? No; it is better that she should give all of her energy to making milk for her foal, but this is not always practicable on the gen- eral farm. The foal soon learns to eat. The earlier he learns to eat oats the better, and the more he eats of them while sucking his dam the better. Add wheat bran to the oats. The bran has a lot of bone in it, and truly marvelous will be the effect on tine young and fast developing animal. Gain made then during babyhood will assuredly never be lost, nor can ground lost then by neglect in feeding ever be regained. Wonderful is the effect of feed on the frame of the baby horse. The first two years fix the bony framework. No subsequent feeding can materially al- ter it, and the first six months gives an impetus toward development abso- lutely essential if the highest results are to be reached. Feed the mare, then, and as early as you can feed the foal too. Then will "weaning time"- be passed by so easily that neither groom nor foal nor mare will regard it as more than a trifling incident. And now Alit of the brain of that colt while" we are feeding so well its body? We roust not neglect our op- portunity to lodge in that soft, pliant and impressionable colt brain certain fundamental facts that will go with it all Its life and upon which may be built great habits of docility, useful- ness and safety. Teach the colt these three cardinal principles -first, that than is stronger than he is; next, that man Is to be obeyed; then that man is his best friend. llow willsyou best do this? While the foal is very young and very ignorant catch it, putting one hantlsat its breast and one hand be- hind it and hold it gently, letting it Ace how much stronger you are than it. (repeat this lesson now and then. The colt will never forget. It, will instinc. Lively associate you with the idea of great and irresistible strength. While it is young .break it to halter. There is no other time so good. Then be good to him. Take him some dainty he likes to eat when you go near him. As in man, the way to a colt's heart is through his stomach. Take time to fondle him, let bins love you, but do not let him become in any way unpleasantly familiar. See that while he loves j he at all times im- plicitly respects you. Then some clay, when the time comes for that colt to be harnessed, there will be no "breaking" needed, only getting 111111 used to the feel of harness, the pressure of the collar and the rattle of lite wheels. Tho Trueness of Wool. Wool should be of the same diameter from root to point. This Is called true- ness. On a poor sheep the Wool grows Hoer, on a at one coarser. Conse- euently a change at condition in either directlen changes the diameter of the same fiber during the different stages of its growth. When the change of condition is great, especially when it takes place from a low and unhealthy state to a healthy, fleshy one, It gener- ally occasions a joint In the wool fiber -in other words, the place In the filer where the change takes place 1s se weak that it takes only a slight putt to break the fiber.
