Johnstone to represent NDP in upcoming election
Jan Johnstone of Kincardine will
represent the Huron -Bruce NDP in
the upcoming Provincial election
this June.
Johnstone has been active in the
local community, particularly in the
field of education, serving as a
trustee in the Bluewater District
School Board since 2001. Currently
she is vice -chair of the Bluewater
District School Board where she
represents the Municipality of
Kincardine and Township of Huron -
Kinloss. She has helped balance 17
consecutive budgets of over $200
million and serves more than 16,000
students and their families. Jan is an
experienced leader with a proven
track record of strengthening public

Major Francis A. Golding passed
away suddenly, but peacefully, at his
home on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
Born in Seaforth on May 20, 1923,
Frank was in his 95th year.
Frank was the beloved husband of
Janie Golding (nee Moffat) for over
60 years, the much loved father of
Elizabeth Scott, Seaforth and
treasured grandpa of Denny Scott
(Ashleigh), Tory Struyf (Jeff),
Marissa Scott (Zack) and Ethan
Scott (Desiree). He was the loving
great -grandpa of Mary Jane Scott
and Evie, Wes and Rhett Struyf.
Frank was predeceased by his son
Mark in 2013 as well as his parents
(Senator) William and Alena
Golding, his siblings and their
spouses; Evelyn and Paddy Parrett,
Arthur and Viola Golding, Dorothy
and Jim Mark, Marjory and Ross
Montgomery, and in-laws Helen and
Tom Wilbee.
Frank joined the military
immediately after graduating from
high school in 1941, and made the
air force his career. He followed his
war -time experience with
peacekeeping tours in Europe and
England. After returning to Canada,
he moved through administrative
postings, retiring in the late 1980s.
He and his wife Janie then enjoyed
winters in their home in
Winterhaven, Florida, and summers
at the cottage and in Seaforth for
many years.
Frank's grandchildren were the
sunshine in his days, and he couldn't
hear enough from them, or share
enough about them.
Frank was a charter member of
Northside United Church, had been
a member of the Shriners, Masons
and Seaforth Legion, and spent
many years volunteering his time for
sport teams and community groups.
Frank was blessed with an
education by working with parents
for school renewal, improving
learning outcomes, expanding the
role of students in shaping education
and standing up for the area's most
vulnerable students. Johnstone is
also a recognized provincial leader
in education having been elected a
Director to Ontario Public School
Boards' Association (OPSBA)
where she chairs the Program Work
Committee.
Johnstone is proud of her role in
supporting community economic
development and sustainability
strategies that help to create positive
social, economic and environmental
change in her community. She is
vice-president of the Kincardine
Scottish Festival and Highland
Games, a community event
attracting over 12,000 visitors and
generating almost $2 million for the
local economy. She is an
enthusiastic participant in many
local health and sustainability
initiatives and is a long-time
supporter of the trade union
movement. In December of 2017 she
was officially recognized as one of
Bruce County's Remarkable
Women.
Johnstone has long time roots in
Huron -Bruce. She and her husband
Gordon have lived in the community
for over 30 years, where they raised
three girls. Professionally, Johnstone
has worked as a social worker in
healthcare, child welfare and
community development, and is a
former CUPE member. Johnstone
holds a Master of Social Work in
Social Policy, which she received
while working and raising her
family. Her husband Gordon has
been a long-time employee of Bruce
Power. He is a former Chief Steward
for the Power Workers and a former
President of the Grey Bruce Labour
Council.
The Huron Bruce NDP has been a
big part of Johnstone's life. She is a
long-time member of the Huron -
Bruce NDP executive where she has
served as the riding president,
provincial councillor, and voting
delegate. Jan has worked on many

abundance of good nature, and lived
to share that blessing with everyone
he met.
Cremation has taken place and a
memorial visitation was held at
McGlynn Family Funeral Home,
Seaforth, on Sunday, May 6 with a
Masonic Lodge Service at 1 p.m.
Visitation continued on Monday,
May 7 at Northside United Church,
Seaforth followed by the funeral
service honouring Frank's life. A
reception followed in the church hall
and interment will take place at
Maitlandbank Cemetery at a later
date.

memorial donations to the Seaforth
Community Hospital Foundation or
the charity of one's choice are

was the dear grandfather of Lizzie
and Gwendolyn Cameron.
Art will be lovingly remembered
by his sisters-in-law Anne Laidlaw,
Wingham and Hazel Laidlaw, New
Hamburg, brother-in-law Gerald
McDowell and his wife Carol,
Auburn as well as many nieces,
nephews and extended family. Art
was predeceased by his parents
Robert and Violet (Bidgood)
Laidlaw and brothers Raymond and
Clifford Laidlaw.
Visitation was held at McBurney
Funeral Home, Wingham on May 5.
The funeral service was held at
Wingham United Church on May 6.
Rev. Richard D. Hall officiated.
Interment was in Wingham
Cemetery.

Arthur Gerald Laidlaw passed
away at Braemar, Wingham on
Tuesday, May 1, 2018. He was in his
83rd year.

(Sadie) Macdonald, who passed
away peacefully at Peel Manor Long
Term Care in Brampton, Ontario on
May 4, 2018. Born on June 27, 1912,
she was 105.
Predeceased by her husband
Burton, Sara is mourned by sister
Lettie and brother Jack, sons Ross
(Barbara), Markdale and Keith
(Dorothy), St. Albert, Alberta;
daughters Ruth (Heinz), Sidney,
British Columbia and Joyce (Glenn),
Brampton. She was the dear
grandmother of Terry, Bradley,
Alexander (Sandy), Bruce, Gail,
Janice, Christine, Carol, Bryan and
Karyn and the great-grandmother of
Joshua, Ashleigh, Matthew,
Alexander, Robin, Emily, Laura,
Amy, Spencer, Paige, Blair, Weston
and Bailey.
Born on a farm near Brussels, in
1912, Sara married Burton
Macdonald in 1931, making homes
throughout southern Ontario in
Cromarty, Staffa, Ajax, Georgetown,
Brampton and Markdale, as well as a
winter home in Lakeland, Florida.
Both Burt and Sara were avid lawn
bowlers and enjoyed many years
bowling at the Georgetown Lawn
Bowling Club.
Sara was an accomplished
musician — sharing God's love
through the piano, organ and the
church bells. She enjoyed a very
election campaigns - including in the
province of Alberta which saw an
historic NDP win. Jan was a federal
candidate in 1997 and a provincial
candidate in 2014. In the 2014
provincial election, Huron -Bruce
NDP had its best results. With
enormous gratitude and pride, and
with the dedication and hard work of
a great campaign team, Johnstone
won the student vote for Huron -
Bruce in 2014. She believes that the
Ontario NDP has a plan that offers
hope and a leader the riding can
count on. With the NDP, all of
Ontario benefits.
Johnston was chosen at the Huron -
Bruce NDP provincial nomination
meeting last month.

and enjoyed playing the organ in
many churches throughout Ontario
and in Florida.
Friends were received at the J.S.
Jones & Son Funeral Home,
Georgetown on Monday, May 7
prior to the funeral service. A
reception followed in the Trafalgar
Room. Interment was held at Mount
Pleasant Cemetery in Ethel on
Tuesday, May 8.
