At the Branch First Catch the Ace draw held at Brussels Legion The start of something big The Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion held the first draw of its Catch the Ace progressive raffle on Friday night. Above, Royal Canadian Legion President Jamie Mitchell oversaw the first draw. Sandra Josling Brown won but didn't catch the $750 jackpot, which will grow as the event continues. (Denny Scott photo) By Jo -Ann McDonald The week around the Brussels Legion Branch has been busy. First there was a group of nearly 80 people attending the Pre -Spring Growers meeting hosted by Millstone Crop Services. They had three guest speakers and many representatives from seed, fertilizer and chemical companies on hand. Following the morning of information they enjoyed a roast beef dinner. Comrades Sandra Josling Brown, Deb Cann, Mary Bradshaw, Deb Ross, Judy Lee and John Lowe did a great job. The Thursday night darts had 17 darters having a great night of play. Winners were: first, Sharon Robbins, Ron Schmidt and Catrina Josling; second, Penny Reynolds and Gord Jacklin; high shots, Ron, 140; Penny, 138; Sharon, 134 and Lawrence Machan, 118. It was a fun night for all. The ladies slo-pitch league held its spring meeting at the Legion on Thursday evening. There were representatives of 10 teams and two carrying voting privileges for two other teams. There will be 12 teams in the league this year and the 25 ladies present discussed rules and changes and enjoyed some social time together. The first night of the Catch the Ace progressive lottery was on Friday night. All went well and the first winner was Sandra Josling Brown who won $254. Her envelope pick was number 50 and it contained the nine of clubs. The search for the ace of spades continues. Next draw is Friday, April 20 with an estimated jackpot of $750. Saturday should have been a very busy day at the Branch, but the weather had other ideas. The Saturday afternoon euchre was cancelled due to the weather. Euchre scheduled for April 28 is now cancelled. The second event for Saturday was the come -and -go celebration for Jack Ryan's 80th birthday. Undoubtably, the weather kept many away, but nearly 80 family members, friends and neighbours made the journey to wish Jack a happy birthday. Comrades Jo -Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Mabel Glanville, Lisa Glanville, Daisy Wong Schmidt and Joan Smith were the workers for the day. The third event for the day was to have been the Spring O'Limpix. Unfortunately, the weather deteriorated as the day progressed and the decision to cancel was made. The event will be rescheduled in the near future. A lot of planning has been put into the night's events and hopefully there will be lots of teams come out for the event when held. Congratulations to Comrades Eric and Deb Ross and Jim and Sandra Brown on a fine showing at the provincial darts held in Sutton on the weekend. The foursome were fourth in their group of nine teams. They played against teams from Port Kid's Corner Bible Camp set July 16-20 A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Oh my, what's with the white stuff in April? Once again it's a reminder that we do not control the world and we found that out on the weekend. For me it was relief that I was home when the sleet and ice pellets started. I arrived in the wee hours of Friday morning from Alberta and was settling in, so a little thankful to go with the surprise in the weather. All is well in Alberta, well, in Edmonton and Rimby anyway. Newest grandson Hark is growing nicely with a pair of thunder thighs like I haven't seen in a while and a giggle that is contagious. So with my brothers Clif and Jim, our children have six boys born in the last five years in Alberta. You can see why it's important that I keep a regular check on them all. You need to tell the children in your life that Kid's Corner is set for July 16-20 this year. That week is Four Winds receives award The Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) recognized the Brussels Four Barn with the Bricks and Mortar Award at the 2018 National Business Improvement Area Conference in Collingwood earlier this week. The award, according to the OBIAA website, is one of several awards presented at the event. It recognizes streetscaping and public realm improvements. Previously, the Tillsonburg BIA received the award for its facade improvement grant program. Huron East Economic Development Officer Jan Hawley announced the win on Facebook late Monday night, highlighting the importance of the barn in the revitalization of Brussels. The structure has held its first events and has more than 60 weddings booked for the coming wedding seasons. It will also be home to Fresh Petals, a flower shop, in the stone house wing of the structure and a year-round farmers' market. The award marks the sixth time the OBIAA has recognized Huron East, according to Hawley, who said that kind of recognition is a team effort. Plastic has hit the news again, a reminder that we all use way too much of it in our lives and disposal is a major concern. Tons of it floating in the oceans, piles of it in our dumps and in the ditches, minute particles killing marine life and now it's been found in bottled water. So, Sunday is Earth Day, time to really change in using less, accepting we all own part of the problem and need to really think before we purchase things, make the time to reuse and Brussels Legion Catch the Ace Progressive Raffle Winning Ticket: Sandra Josling Brown $254 Envelope #50-9 of Clubs Estimated jackpot $750 for April 20 Brussels Lions Club COMMUNITY BREAKFAST Sunday, April 22nd 8:00 am - 12:30 pm Brussels Morris & Grey Community Centre, 800 Sports Dr., Brussels, Ontario Let the Lions cook for you! For the folks at the United Church our many moments with our Student Intern Hillary MacDonald are coming to an end this month. We were blessed to be part of her learning and we think we've given her a few rural lessons that will serve her well. Well, maybe not in Calgary, where she's headed.
