HE budget now up for approval
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron East's proposed tax rate
will remain at 5.6 per cent going into
council's April 3 meeting when the
budget will be considered for final
approval.
Few changes were proposed for
the third draft of the budget, which
was presented to council at its
March 20 meeting. Treasurer Paula
Michiels had suggested that the
municipality purchase only one
pickup truck this year, as opposed to
the recommended two, following
council's direction. This change was
approved by council, but Councillor
Alvin McLellan suggested leaving
the $30,000 for the truck in the
budget, but allocating it to
equipment reserves.
The idea behind the move,
McLellan said, would be to stagger
the purchase of new trucks
(assuming that if they're purchased
at the same time, they will both have
to be replaced at the same time) so
that the municipality doesn't keep
getting hit with a mountain of costs
all at once.
However, with large pieces of

wickedness" (1 John 1:9).
At this time his sisters came back
into the room. I began to walk away
from his bed to make room so they
could come along side of him. With
my back turned, walking away, I
suddenly heard his sisters gasp. I
quickly turned around and I couldn't
believe what I was seeing. The man
was suddenly sitting up in his bed,
his eyes were open and he was
staring in my direction intensely. I
really believe he was seeing more
than just me and his sisters there in
that room. I believe Jesus was there
too and so I looked at the man and
said to him quite commandingly,
"Trust Him". And with that, he laid
back down, closed his eyes and he
trusted Jesus. He was gone.
At this Easter season we are
reminded of two truths. One is
death. George Bernard Shaw once
wrote, "The statistics on death are
quite impressive. One out of one
people die." The Bible tells us, "...
each person is destined to die once
and after that comes judgment..."
(Hebrews 9:27)
But Easter isn't just about Jesus'
death. The other truth of Easter is
that Jesus rose again. He conquered
death and He invites you to join Him
in His victory just as that man lying
in his hospital bed did that day many
years ago.
If you haven't done that maybe
you would like to take a moment
now. Tell Jesus you would like to
take Him up on His most loving
offer, to exchange your sin for His
righteousness. Then enjoy the rest of
your days following Him home.
equipment needing to be replaced in
the coming years, such as a grader
and a new fire truck, McLellan felt
that saving the money for the 2019
budget made sense if the
municipality had it right now.
Council agreed and made the
change, which didn't impact the
bottom line of the budget.
This means that the proposed tax
rate increase across Huron East will
remain at 5.6 per cent overall. This
ranges from a reduction of 0.48 per
cent in Brussels to an increase of
8.82 per cent in McKillop. When
increases at the Huron County and
school board levels are included, the
total tax rate increase will be 5.6 per
cent for Huron East.
The budget will be up for final
approval and adoption at the April 3
meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. in
the Huron East municipal office in
Seaforth.
