Victim Services the real winners of charity game
A good time
The Fire Department of North Huron (FDNH) and local Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
officers faced off in a special fundraiser hockey game benefitting Victim Services of Huron
County on Saturday. The game, held in Blyth, raised nearly $1,800 for the organization. Above,
a ceremonial puck drop was held to start the game. From left: Provincial Constable Chris

The North Huron Heat Seekers,
comprised of members of the Blyth
and Wingham Firefighters
Associations, faced off against the
Huron OPP Ice Hogs at the Blyth
and District Community Centre on
Saturday as part of a fundraiser for
Victim Services of Huron County.
While the Ice Hogs may have won
the game, the real winners that day
were those people who benefit from
the assistance that Victim Services
of Huron County provide.
Representative Deb Logue
explained that nearly $1,800 was
raised through the game, the chuck -
a -puck competition and the silent
auction.
"Every donation is fantastic," she
said. "We were a little down from
last year, but everything helps."
Cycling event plans Blyth stop
This summer, the Goderich to
Guelph (G2G) Rail Trail will be
hosting a special round-trip tour
called the "Canada Rides G2G 4 -
Day Trail Ride".
The event will run from Friday,
June 29 to Monday, July 2.
Participants start in Elmira and make
their way to Blyth with an option to
continue on to Goderich. The trip
includes the option of spending time
at local attractions along the way
and then returning to Elmira.
Organizer Grace Vanden Heuvel
explained that cyclists will travel
between 30 and 60 kilometres on the
first leg of the trip, depending on
whether they start in Guelph or
Kitchener/Waterloo or get on the
G2G trail at Elmira. The day will
end in West Montrose where riders
will camp overnight.
Day two will see cyclists travel 90
kilometres, starting with a brief trip
back to Elmira for breakfast at the
Elmira Legion. The trip includes
stops in Millbank and Linwood for
refueling before ending in Blyth,
where they can take in a show at the
Blyth Festival. The New Canadian
Curling Club will be on the
Memorial Hall stage that night.
On July 1, Canada Day, riders are
invited for an optional trip to
Goderich's beach on Lake Huron.
Riders will leave Blyth after
breakfast and enjoy a reception and
lunch on the beach in Goderich
before returning to Blyth for dinner
and fireworks.
On July 2, cyclists will leave Blyth
for Elmira for the official finish. The
trip includes a stop in Milverton for
refueling.
Tickets cost $375 and include
support on the ride including
luggage and camping gear
transportation and road assistance.
Eight meals are included, as well as
refreshments at stops along the way
xitszik>i
and community stops as well.
Parking is also included, as well as
a camping space for three nights
with facilities and the above
activities, minus the tickets to the
Blyth Festival show.

The hockey game, which was held
in Huron East last year, is part of the
organization branching out into new
fundraising opportunities after
traditionally relying on its annual
Dancing with the Stars event as its
primary fundraiser.
Logue explained that expansion is
designed not just to increase
fundraising potential, but also to
spread the word about the group and
the services they provide.
"It brings awareness of what
Victim Services offers and shows the
collaboration and camaraderie
between first responders who we
often work with," Logue said.
The game brought out
approximately 100 visitors, which
was similar to last year's game,
Logue said.
Unfortunately for the local fire
departments, Logue said there seems
to be a bit of a trend starting where
the firefighters can't keep up with
their police competition.
"It could be because the OPP play
a little more regularly," she said.
"They might have more cohesion on
the ice, but the good humour on the
ice is pretty standard."
Logue didn't comment on the fact
that retired OPP officer Don
Shropshall was the head referee for
the game or any impact that may
have had on the final score.
She said there seems to be a
stigma when it comes to the
relationship between firefighters and
police and it's good that, locally,
people are able to joke about that.
Victim Services of Huron
County's next fundraiser is an
auction event scheduled for April 25
at the Seaforth and District
Community Centre auditorium. For

organization at 519-600-4108 or
