The Citizen, 2018-03-29, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 29, 2018. testers unAnti-proa lauded or g courage A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 waiting for the warmth, but in the meantime, the sunshine is a nice treat. Easter preparations are in mind as a long weekend approaches. Gatherings are often part of the fun as family and friends pause to consider life, love and history. For our area, food is often taken for granted but plays a big role in how we celebrate. For us time, tradition and preferences of the generations Ah, spring is here, at least by the are all considered for the menu of calendar. Now just a little more Easter. Seasonal highlight The Huron County Beef Producers held their annual dinner and dance at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Saturday. The annual event had patrons lined up out the door. (Denny Scott photo) At the Branch Legion starts `Catch the Ace' fundraiser By Jo -Ann McDonald The week at Brussels Legion Branch began with the entertainment committee meeting to discuss the upcoming events. A new venture is the "Catch The Ace" initiative the Branch will conduct. For those who have not heard of the weekly progressive raffle, I will attempt to explain. A deck of 52 cards is placed in separate envelopes, sealed and numbered. The envelopes are locked in a secure location until the weekly draw. Tickets are sold during the week, $5 each, at the Brussels Legion, the Jam Jar, Murray's Barbershop and the Walton Inn, during regular business hours. The buyer fills in their name, address, phone number and a number selection, between one and 52 on the ticket stub in hopes of choosing the envelope with the ace of spades. There will be 500 tickets available to be sold per week. Persons must be 19 years and older. The draw for the winning ticket and a chance to pick a numbered envelope containing the ace of spades will be held on Friday evenings at the Branch. The winning ticket drawn will receive 20 per cent of the weekly sales of tickets and a chance to select a numbered envelope with a minimum prize board amount. Thirty per cent of the ticket sales will go into the "Catch the Ace" jackpot. If the ace of spades is not found, the draw is concluded for that week and new tickets are required weekly until it is found. When the ace of spades is found, the winner receives the 20 per cent of the weekly ticket sales plus the amount in the jackpot. If the ace of spades is not found during the life of the licence, a jackpot amount could reach $30,000 for the eventual winner, which is all dependant on the number of tickets sold weekly. This is just a shortened version, and my understanding of how the draw works. The draw is governed by rules set out by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, Municipality of Huron East Licence, and the rules will be adhered to by the Draw Committee of Branch 218. This is a very successful and exciting progressive raffle that has caused great excitement in surrounding areas including Seaforth, Listowel and Howick, where tickets sell out weekly within hours, and the Brussels Legion is hoping it will be a success in Brussels. Look for the tickets available at the four locations beginning in early April. The committee met again on Thursday evening to finalize the details after receiving the licence and are ready to go for the first draw on April 13. Our condolences to the Alcock family on the passing of Comrade Bill Alcock of Goderich. He will be missed by family Rick, Kathy, Mike and Paul and families. Our sympathies to sister-in-law Cora Alcock and extended family in the area. The Brussels Pipe Band is looking for new members. They provide free lessons on learning the pipes and encourage persons of all ages that are interested to contact Pipe Major Don Martin for information. They meet for practice on Thursday evenings at the Brussels Legion. There will be euchre on Saturday, March 31 for all who want to play. Bring your own partner and have some fun for Easter! The greatest privilege of growing old is being part of the changing world. As we age, those around us do too and this includes their thoughts, preferences and attitude to life. Time changes everyone and sometimes keeping up with those people around the table can be challenging. Gatherings change as we do, but no matter the food, it always gets eaten and the conversations are worth every thought. It's a joy to be part of the changing world. "Let the children lead us" is an old thought, often ignored. Recently the world is taking notice of that thought. Death is an event that changes people and when 17 deaths hit a Parkland, Florida high school the surviving students took the lead. Their friends had died needlessly. Their grief, then anger, took form. This past weekend, March For Our Lives events were held in 800 sites around the world including at leat 12 in Canada. Incensed by the gun availability in the U.S. and the foolishness of the move to allow rapid-fire guns in stores, the surviving Parkland students have risen up. In organized, articulate rebellion, the students are speaking out on behalf of the adults who have suffered the effects of stray or intended bullets. Now adults know it's time to follow and they are in numbers that are making the politicians tremble in fear. We all know that when things are getting out of our control, we try to shift the blame to others. So I shook my head on Monday when an article in the Toronto Star was trying to put the students in their place accusing them of being rock stars in the media and smiling at cameras when their friends had died. No mention of the number of type of guns available without licence, no note of the number of gun deaths since the first of the year or the readiness to make gun sales.
