On Saturday, it was announced that Mulroney, along with two other candidates, had been beaten out by Doug Ford, the brother of former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, for the leadership of the party. (Denny Scott photo) By Denny Scott The Citizen Caroline Mulroney, one of three Ontario PC leader hopefuls defeated by Doug Ford over the weekend, greeted party supporters in Thresher's Hall at Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company last Thursday. It was announced on Saturday that Ford won the position, beating out Mulroney as well as former decade- long Whitby -Oshawa MPP Christine Elliott and Tanya Granic Allen, a businesswoman, public speaker and writer who claims 20 years experience in politics. Mulroney's visit to Blyth was near the end of her lengthy tour in an effort to drum up support for her leadership run and the PC party in general on Thursday. She spoke to between 75 and 100 attendees at the brewery, outlining her aspirations and goals for herself and the party. First, she introduced herself, saying that while she may not be the most famous child of her father, former Prime Minister of Canada Brian Mulroney, she has her own experiences to draw on that she felt made her the best candidate. She said she has worked in the private sector in business and law, currently is vice-president of an investment firm and is working with her charity, The Shoebox Project for Shelters, all while raising four children. "I decided I couldn't stand by while [Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne] mortgaged my children's future," she said. 11111111.111111111111 )(PLORNET Connect to what matters xplornet.com During a question period with local media, Mulroney fielded questions about job creation, International Women's Day (with which her visit coincided) and her unsuccessful bid to have the provincial PC party extend its leadership election period in light of members having issues with registering to vote as well as other complications. When asked about local employers finding difficulty filling positions, both trained and entry- level, she said that is an issue she has been made aware of and is planning on tackling in her bid to increase employment. She said Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, had been rushed and the impact of that needed to be dealt with. When asked why she chose Blyth as a stop in her provincial tour, she said she was thrilled to visit the village and attributed some of the cause for her visit to Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company President Steven Sparling and his wife Laurie. She also credited Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson for her hard work on Queen's Park. "It's a pleasure to be here with Laurie and Steven [Sparling]," she said, calling Cowbell an extraordinary brewery. Mulroney also spoke on the leadership race which started shortly after former leader Patrick Brown stepped down approximately a month and a half ago. Cowbell Brewing Company's Chief Storyteller Floyd Herman thanked Mulroney for stopping at the brewery, explaining that it was a great example of job creation. He pointed out that, after a current recruiting drive finishes, Cowbell aims to have approximately 225 employees, nearly one quarter the population of Blyth. Mulroney is running for election in York-Simcoe to fill retired Tory MPP Julia Munro's spot, which Munro held since 1995. Mulroney was named the riding's PC candidate in September of last year, receiving Munro's support. Earlier this month, the York- Simcoe Provincial Liberal Association announced it would be nominating Loralea Carruthers as its candidate to run against Mulroney. --#1 And We Still Try Harder Recent circulation figures show The Citizen has the highest circulation in the. northern part of Huron County, #3 in the entire county.
