World Day of Prayer focuses on Suriname
A NOTE FROM BETTY

The kids are holding their breath.
Just another week of school, then it's
time for March Break. Ready for
time to get outside and play, time to
sleep in and time to have some fun.
If the sun keeps shining, all will be
well in the fun world.
March 2, the first Friday, was
World Day of Prayer which was held
this year at the Mennonite
Fellowship. Since 1920, women
from around the world, took pause,
and thought and prayed for others on
the first Friday of March. It's an old
tradition in our area with services
At the Branch
prepared by selected countries and
held in most areas.
This year, the women of
Suriname, named for the indigenous
tribe, prepared the worship. This
small country in the northeast part of
South America gained its
independence from Dutch rule in
recent years. Suriname is located in
the Guinasas, part of the Amazon
region and they are leaders in
sustainability. Learning about the
country and hearing words put
together from across the globe, gives
us a yearly time to pause and think
about God's world and our place in
it.
If spring cleaning is your thing, be
brave and toss a few things.
Donations are always welcome at
5R's, but pause and think who might
buy your treasure. Ours is a small
store and what we can't sell must be
moved along.
A provincial election is coming in
June and sometimes, you wish all
the players would get sensible, use
the common sense they have and
play fair. It did my heart good to read
in a recent Toronto Star a column by
Martin Regg Cohn. He was
moderator on behalf of Ryerson's
Faculty of Arts on electoral
engagement. All four party leaders
attended. Knowing our voter turnout
is abysmal, barely half of eligible
votes use this privilege, the
wonderful thing about this gathering
was that they all came ready to
listen, talk and accept their part of
the blame for their part in this
disturbing trend.
Cohn used words like thoughtful,
civil and collegial as he reported on
their exchange of ideas on political
behaviour, media opinion, trust,
accountability and education. This
piece was a ray of hope, leaders
listening and learning in a civilized
manner. Their mothers would be
proud, now let's hope we can get
people to vote; it's a Canadian
privilege.
The lights were on at the Four
Speakers compete at zone level
By Jo -Ann McDonald
The week at the Brussels Legion
Branch began with the Brussels
Lions Club hosting its bi-weekly
meeting. They had a good crowd of
members attending and the special
guest was an OPP officer to talk
about scams and fraud. Branch
members helping to feed the group
included Jo -Ann McDonald, Sandra
Josling Brown, Glenn Bridge and
Linda Bird. Good job everyone!
Tuesday evening the Cadet Corps
met upstairs for their weekly
meeting.
The General meeting for February
for the Branch was held downstairs
with seven executive members
present. Reports were heard from
those present and action was taken
considering past decisions. The
Branch will proceed with replacing
the old ceiling upstairs soon.
The Branch is hosting a pub trivia
night on March 17. Come out and
participate for $5 a person to answer
the trivia. The newsletter is done and
will be in the mail, so Comrades
check out what's going on, what we
have done and what the Branch is
going to do!
The Thursday night darts had 14
players hoping to be the winners of
the night. It was a nail biting finish
with Lawrence Machan and Sandra
Josling Brown coming back from an
almost skunk to beat Sheron
Stadelmann and Gord Jacklin for
first place. The high shots of the
night were 153 by Gord for the men
and for the ladies, both Sheron and
Sandra hitting 140.
The Branch had four Comrades go
to Walkerton for district euchre on
the weekend. The four included Eric
Ross, Bob Richardson, Barry
O'Krafta and Norm Dobson,
replacing Comrade Lloyd Glanville,
who had played at the zone level.
The foursome had a good day and
won nine games, but needed to win
at least 11 to advance to provincial.
They had a good day and congrats to
them.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 11 tables of players hoping to
take home top prize of $50. Winners
were: first, Judy Hahn and Edna
McLellan, 80; second, Trey and Phil,
78; third, Ivan Bennewies and Vera,
77; lone hands, Dianne and Betty,
five and low, Janet Davies and Hazel
McGonigle, 42. Euchre is again in
two weeks.
The zone competition for public
speaking was held on Saturday in
Kincardine. Brussels had two
speakers attending, Hailey
Beuermann and Rowan Gaspirc.
There were 10 speakers in the
Primary division with Rowan and
the winner was from Goderich.
There were nine speakers in the
junior division with Hailey. The
winner was from Kincardine. There
was also an intermediate division
that had eight speakers but none
from our Branch. The first place
winners from each division will
advance to district competition in
Goderich in early April. The day was
run by Zone Youth Chairman
Comrade Robert Forrest of
Kincardine. There were 30 youth
participating during the day from
Goderich, Wingham, Hensall,
Lucknow, Kincardine, Clinton,
Blyth, Ripley and Howick. A great
day and a great learning experience
for all. Congratulations to Hailey
and Rowan for a job well done!
The Sunday Night dance had a
small crowd attend and enjoy the
music of the Crippled Duck band.
They played some of the newer
songs for the crowd to enjoy. Next
dance is March 18 with Tri -Country
band.
