NH to move quickly on FD hire
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
North Huron and the Fire
Department of North Huron will be
looking at different options for
quickly filling the Chief and
Director of Fire and Emergency
Services role left absent by Ryan
Ladner last year.
The role needs to be filled quickly
as council could be in a lame duck
situation as of the end of July where
the uncertainty of the coming
election limits council's decision-
making abilities.
The Director of Fire and
Emergency Services and Chief role
was to be filled by Emergency
Services Training Centre Principal
Mark Alderman until council, faced
with a mass walkout by over 40
firefighters in reaction to the move,
decided on a more meticulous
process, including feedback from the
firefighters.
Currently, Deputy -Chiefs Chad
Kregar and Matt Townsend have
been handling the day-to-day
operations of the fire department.
Kregar and Townsend, as per
council's decision to not fill the role
with Alderman and instead search
out a replacement, have been
consulting on that search.
In a report on Jan. 15, Chief
Administrative Officer Dwayne
Evans stated that North Huron could
take advantage of services offered by
the Ontario Association of Fire
Chiefs to help with the search. He
explained the association would be
as involved as council likes, from
providing resources for the process
to taking it over completely.
Council decided to pursue hiring a
replacement as per Evans'
suggestion with input from the
association and existing firefighters,
but also to consider sharing a
fire chief with another neighbouring
municipality.
Reeve Neil Vincent explained it
was necessary as the municipality
wanted to have a fire chief or sharing
solution in place before the lame
duck period.
"That's part of the reason we're
doing them together," he said.
The fire department will also be
looking to refill its ranks of
volunteer firefighters. Currently,
they have less than the 22 members,
so Kregar and Townsend will be
going through former applicants
and, if necessary, advertising for
new volunteer firefighters.
Council approved motions for the
search for the new chief, including
potentially sharing with another
municipality, and finding
replacement firefighters.
